Russian designations are well forgettable. normally a randomized combination of numerals and letters often used only by technical papers that rarely leave the military environment. There are some Russian nicknames but they are few far between used for a number of different systems many in the same class. Nato Code names were by contrast widely available published and memorable as well as narrow in scope to models and family's of systems Flanker E is a SU35 and not a Mig 29. it's not vague and it's easily modified to add in new models.
The Russians adopted them unofficially because they recognized the advantages and in some cases they felt it was a sign of there prowess and a badge of honor. Back in the early 90's I remember a documentary on the Russian Airforce Where they interviewed a Russian Pilot when asked about his plane he proudly said he flew a Fulcrum. He said he liked that it was called a Fulcrum because it was the point on which the Russian Fighting air forces would turn.
Now as to the AK47. AK47 technically are the First generation Production weapons made from 1946 to 1959 but there was a problem first production units were made with a stamped receiver, the Russians had not really mastered Stamped yet and there first Ak 47 batches had a very high rejection rate. So they switched to a different manufacturing method using a milled Forging. but this was still troubled this lead to a Third version with a milled receiver form steel bar stock. by 1959 the Russians Introduced the AKM series This featured a number of changes including switching back to a Stamped manufacturing as the Russians felt confident by that point in there Stamping. Ak47 is the predecessor of AKM and AKM is the basis for production of all modern AK. save for the AK107 and 108.
