Russia evinces keen interest in acquiring Dhruv NEW DELHI, JAN 10 (PTI)
After Chile, Russia has evinced keen interest in acquiring India's Advanced Light Helicopter 'Dhruv', which would be airborne soon after minor rectifications of its rotor blades, Secertary Defence Production K P Singh said here today.

"The faults in rear rotor blades of 'Dhruv' have been rectified and the helicopter would be flying again within days," he said briefing newsmen on the preparations for the upcoming Defence Expo- 2006.

Labelling the ALH as the best helicopter in its class, Singh said it was only as a matter of "abundant caution" that the helicopters had been grounded for some time to indentify the faults and rectify them.

He said a delegation headed by a Joint Secretary in Defence Production would leave for Moscow in a day or two to negotiate with the Russians on their proposal to acquire the Dhruvs.

Earlier, Air Marshal Padamjit Singh Ahluwalia, Director General, Flight Safety, IAF, had said a high-level committee comprising experts from Hindustan Aeronautics, IAF, Navy and Army had been constituted to look into any technical snags in Dhruvs, while asserting that the helicopters would be flying soon.

Makes sense. I don't think Russia has any light helicopters in its arsenal. The Hind Class helos seem to be pretty heavy so I guess it would be cheaper for the Russians to aquire light helicopters from India than to fund R&D to build one.

The russians have "light" helicopters but it seems the Dhruv is in fact a stop gap measure caused by the end of the Kasatka (ka-60) project. The Kasatka was supposed to be Russia's Black Hawk, but its cost suddenly became prohibitive.

KAsatka...

Dhruv generally fall into the medium category , they can carry 14 fully equipped soldiers or 2600 kg (5731 lbs.) . The Aloutte choppers(cheetah and chetak and their upgrades & derivatives ) that serve Indian Army fall in the light category !!!

If Russia goes for it , their immense experience will help the product getting even better .
But I guess what engines will russia have , not the Turbomeca or the Joint HAL-Turbomeca Shakti engines !!!

well, the good news is that dhruv has shown itself to be good enough to pass the Russian standard. Now, let's see if the Chileans are also going to purchase it.

more like: "we will buy your chopper IF you buy our mig-35."
russia does not have real friends, not china, not india, not iran. it just cares about money and keeping a world position.
