QBZ-191 service rifle family

To a point. But a longer barrel really only works to a point and at the same time to milk accuracy from said barrel it has to be really rigid. So you end up with a heavy profile with a heavier weight. This is as a thin long barrel will vibrate when a bullet traverses it.
Most intermediate calibers stabilize and max gas pressures and muzzle velocity around 16.5-18 inches.
That would add an entirely new gun into logistics.
Already have one type 88.
Yet the point of the QBZ191 series seems to be to standardize on a more universal rifle than the older system.

I guess if China were to add a larger caliber ammo then longer barrel would make more sense.

Generally to a point. The DMR category only requires range and accuracy to a point.
At that point, wouldn't it better to just use a sniper rather than a DMR?
Sniper Rifles and Designated Marksman Rifles are category of role rather than design. The US M110A1 fits in both by different accessories and optic. The Soviets and PLA used the 7.62x54 round for their DMR well operating the 7.62x39mm (5.45x39mm) as their primary assault rifle calibers. The US, UK, Germany, France and many many more operate 7.62x51mm for DMR rifles as well as sniper rifles well using 5.56x45mm as the primary weapon.

Part of this depends on what you want from your DM?

Anyone have any ideas on the barrel twist rate of the new rifle? Wonder if it’s different between variants.

Would it make sense for dmr to be bullpup for more barrel length?
Perhaps, but besides bullpup by nature has what a lot of shooters called "bad trigger feel", a lot of improvements would've to render on the QBU-88, which kind of defeat the purpose of designing a new AR platform to deal with DMR requirement as well.

Then again, if to introduce specialist ammo along with the DMR, they really don't have to stick with 5.8mm...

Surely he wants to mount that laser-light thing anywhere else? It must be blocking at least half the sight picture from the new optic?!

There are ready made pict rail slots at the 3 and 9 o’clock positions on the front of the stock, where you would normally expect to mount such a thing.

I wonder how well that would even hold zero, considering the top rail on the handguard portion looks to be made of polymer...
