These could be the packing boxes depicted by the diagram, although the diagram may actually be depicting a packing tray that goes into the packing box; a packing box may contain more than one packing tray. These packing boxes are used to transport the new assault rifles from the factory to the troops. The caption accompanying these images states that the packing team worked 16 hours a day for 23 days to pack more than 20,000 boxes.

Judging by the depth of those packing boxes in the background, they look like each can fit two trays (stacked vertically), with each tray carrying five rifles. So 20,000 of these boxes could mean 200,000 rifles.

Likes like the boxes have two layers, one for rifles and accessories, with another for magazines, grenades and what looks like boxed ammo in stripper clips.

Looking at the photo, that looks to be 10 men in each row and 3 rows total. 30 men working 16 hour days for 23 days is just over 11,000 man hours. That’s would be like picking 18 guns, or less than one crate, per man per hour if it was just double stacked 5 gun layers, which is pretty poor efficiency.

It if it was 5 guns; plus 5 sets of accessories/optics; plus 50 Mags (which they might had to load with rounds form stripper clips); plus however many grenades and boxed rounds, well then the need to work 16 hour days would start to make sense.

Speaking of packing boxes, here's a packing diagram for the new squad automatic weapon.

Seeing this nice modern factory always speaks volumes to the progress made.
I found this article long ago, and I always thought it was well written and candid. Also has some real throwback pictures

I'm doing research on the PLA ever since Squad (video game) announced they were doing a Chinese faction (under the name of Pan-Asian).

I noticed that China seems to be overhauling its ground forces. Has this new family of rifles been seen outside of parades?

Besides some really obscure pictures that aren't official, nope. I think they don't want to repeat the qbz 95 fiasco again which is understandable. As of now, the qbz 95-1, qbz 95-1B and the qbz 03 are still in service while the 81 is rarely used. However, the infantry equipment that was shown in the parade is being distributed relatively quickly.

Wait, can you explain what fiasco?

Before the qbz 95 started to be produced en masse in the late 1990's, the designers didn't test it enough to check if it would withstand certain conditions (ex: 5000 rounds test or something like that) or if the ergonomics were good. As a result, a significant amount of complaints were made by the military. Such complaints included bad ergonomics such as the selector switch position and trigger.

According to this

, the head designer, Duo Yingxian, said that "his team was under a strict 2½-year timeline (plus two years of field testing) to complete the design" and that the rifle could have been much improved if he had been given more time. Plus, he claimed that the rifle had to be made with poor-quality materials at that time. So, improvements were made to the rifle and the qbz 95-1/qbz 95G was introduced and replaced many of the old qbz 95's. However, a decent amount of those old versions are still in service among rear echelon and support troops or combat units that are of "less importance" if you catch my drift.

@by78 you can probably screen cap some good pics from this video, my screenshots are shit, file sizes are too big won't let me upload directly
LOL. Speak of the devil, just when I was saying there weren't any official pics of the rifle after the parade, it appears in an official pla video.
