Is there a reason why the Chinese went with the reciprocating charging handle like the AK and the buffer tube like a direct impingement AR? Strange combo isn't it? The buffer tube negates the advantage of a folding stock like AKs and other piston driven guns, while reciprocating charging is generally considered undesirable in modern guns, isn't that why FN got rid of their reciprocating charging handle after the public outcry from gun buyers?
I know that for the SCAR, the early versions’ reciprocating charging handles received criticism for its location. It was in a weird location where the supporting hand would be.

If you mounted optics and went to use it it also would draw blood.
The location in cycle meant that if you fired and had your thumb over the top in the 5.56 you could induce a short stroke. In the 7.62 you would get a nasty bruise.

The advantage of the Reciprocal charging handle is you don’t need a forward assist if the bolt isn’t closing. A bit less machining.
Disadvantage, ergonomics

Advantage of the buffer tube is reduced felt recoil due to the increased dwell time and bolt travel.
dis advantage much more difficult to do a folding stock (it is possible though) Bullpup configurations are just awkward.

My bad, yes indeed, the HK416 is a piston driven with buffer tube gun. Making it more like the QBZ than the AK. The HK416 is known for its weight, I wonder if the QBZ is heavy, any stats on that?

According to the internet, it's between 3.4 and 3.6 kg which are 7.46 and 7.6 lbs respectively unloaded. So its weight is similar to that of a HK416.
