I thought mlok was a free patent though? I don't think anyone ever has to pay any fees to use it. And even if it had to, I don't think they would've cared.
Mlok use needs to pay a symbolic licensing fees, fees can be permanent after use, but the people's liberation army are not allowed to do so on firearms

I think that was another thing called KeyMod, that one was open source. I honestly thought it was better, at least in terms of ideology behind the design.
Keymod though was found wanting in terms of stress and locking.
Mlok is free license, Keymod is open source. Mlok was put as a Free license so as to ensure that makers are building up to specifications allowing universal commonality. Keymod is open source which makes it fair game.

I can't confirm this myself but I've been hearing keymod is gaining unusual high popularity in the last 3 years. Heard some gun reviewer say the keymod turned out to be better but then you got people on the other side like TerraN saying his points.

According to posts I have seen online and this video by Brownells:

MLOK is sturdier than Keymod in regards to holding in place the attachment although both can do the job well. Plus MLOK is SOCOM’s go to rail system at this point.

Yeah, it was quite widely known for a few years now that MLOK won over Key mod from the US military assessments.

There's a reason why things like M110A1 and URGI use MLOK as the negative space mounting option on their handguards rather than Keymod.

Most other military forces that are adopting a negative space mounting option for recent rifles or upgrade kits seem to be going for MLOK too.
