DDG 167 won't be relegated to experimental ship because the PLAN already have 4 dedicated testing vessel to perform such task, as they've bigger decks and modular mounts to test mount new weapons and gears.

DDG 167 maybe old but with less than 20 years by age, there's still a good deal of hull life left in it yet. So it's yet to be seen what sort of modernisation work this time performs.

My reason for speculating a cutter is that, the size, displacement are right. Converting to cutter is cheaper than putting up new expansive equipments for the navy. If being converted to CG, shouldn't 167 have been decommissioned first? I don't think that has happened. Also, if converting to CG, this is awfully an expensive conversion. The 053H2Gs were converted by simply removing armament and mostly getting a new paint scheme.

Displacing around 6,100 tons, it has a large hull capable of weapons upgrade. So it can still be very useful for the navy. It's hangar is capable of carrying two helos so a role in ASW would help shore up a gap in the current PLAN's capabilities.

I don't think a coast guard transfer was ever a serious suggestion.

Not only is such a ship a massive overkill for the coast guard's needs, it was designed with different roles and priorities compared to a coast guard ship, so will be a lot more costly to operate then a specialist coast guard ship of the same tonnage. Thus there would be little reason for the coast guard to want it.

167 is getting a 'top plate'... I don't think this is gonna be a coast guard ship.

If they're going to keep the HQ-7, then why'd they remove the entire structure that houses the HQ-7 and its reloads? Provided that the now leveled deck still has enough depth to house the VLS silos, given the HQ-16 now servicing in significant enough numbers (onboard the 054A class FFGs) that it'd make sense as part of the effort to phase out HQ-7 as ship-borne SAM system in PLAN?

BTW, that pic is a screencap of at DSLR LCD display, so that means there's a clearer picture out there, only waiting for the censors to give it a green light.
