Some good news coming from Samaa news channel stating that Pak government has approved purchase of 8 x SSK from China

Let's wait and see what happens

2015 is already a big year might just get bigger the financial issues might have been resolved
Any indication as to which ones?

Too bad there is no way of knowing what the noise levels are of these subs. We know that the nuclear subs of China has significant noise problems. But China has build relatively few nuclear submarines and has little experience compared to building SSK's. China's material science, design and machine tools are all improving so noise levels should be going down fast. But I doubt those will be as quiet as the Japanese and German subs.

Yes but word has it that no Western country (France or Germany) was willing to share vital technology or have ToT

And if Pakistan is looking to add vital home built missiles like naval Babur cruise missiles you are pretty much not going to have them installed on a Western submarine

Plus how long has India waited for the French deal? With China the timescales are fast

A modern Chinese SSK with AIP is really the best PN can do, get 6 built in China with 2 at Karachi

Didn't the Khalid class submarines come with French ToT ? If Pakistan wants to fire Barbur cruise missile's from it subs then the Chinese ones are their only option. We will have to wait and see if China is willing to add anything special to the subs that they sell to Pakistan like the Israeli Dolphins that has 650mm "torpedo" tubes.

Yes but that was over 20 years ago now India has more leverage which could be a possibility especially since Rafale deal

Pakistan plans to buy eight S20 Submarines from China based on PLAN's Type 039A SSK

According to various media, Pakistan's National Assembly Standing Committee on Defence was told on Tuesday that the government has approved the purchase of eight submarines from China. The deal which is still being negotiated
is expected to be one of China’s biggest arms sales. Eventough the details on the exact type of submarine to be procured by the Pakistani Navy are still scarce, Navy Recognition strongly believes it will be S20 submarines.

CSOC was also showcasing a new submarine on its stand at IDEX: The S20.

The CSOC representative gave us the following specifications for this new submarine:
Length: 66 meters
Breadth: 8 meters
Maximum Draft: 8 meters
Displacement (submerged): 2,200 tons
Maximum speed: about 20 Knots
Crew: 40

It used to be a French market, now it is a Chinese one (because of the Rafale deal ?)

It didn't take long before the naysayers and haters makes it sound like it's all bad news.

A couple of weeks ago, after a visit to India, I wrote an op-ed for the Indian weekly Open with my

. The biggest take-away was how openly suspicious the Indians are about China and its intentions in the Indian Ocean.

That suspicion got another boost yesterday, with Islamabad announcing that it has approved, in principle, the purchase of

This is big news for a number of reasons. First, it's a large order for a navy that currently only operates five submarines. Second, it will be the first time China has exported its submarines, which says something about the improvements in its military technology (granted, Pakistan is probably buying on price as well as capability, but this is a navy that has previously bought advanced European submarines, so its not an undiscerning customer).

And third, it represents a fairly blunt Chinese statement about its willingness to cooperate with Pakistan to challenge Indian maritime power. Of course China has sold arms to Pakistan before, and in fact it helped Pakistan develop its nuclear and ballistic missile programs. China has also sold surface ships to the Pakistan Navy in the past. But in the maritime domain, it is fair to say that this is a step-change in China's involvement with the Pakistan military.

Things are likely to get even more discomfiting for India soon, with Xi Jinping set to visit Pakistan from April 10, where he will address parliament. The newspaperDawn

Sources say that during the visit, over two dozen memoranda of understanding (MOUs) regarding nuclear power, the Gwadar Port, the Pak-China Economic Corridor (PCEC), energy, trade and investment will be signed by Pakistan and China.

It will be interesting to hear what is announced on the Chinese-developed Gwadar Port, which has been

as an example of Beijing's attempt to encircle India with naval bases, and also as a way for China to avoid maritime choke points in the Indian and Pacific oceans by moving Persian Gulf oil and gas over land from Gwadar to China. This theory has been

in the past, partly on the grounds that the port is not supported by sufficient road and rail infrastructure, but this might be set to change.
