Some pics of the improved Han or 091G. Only early last year, the PLAN implemented a policy to put white warning markings on subs in areas where they have passive flank sonars. This is to prevent tugboats from bumping into the sonars and damaging them. Thus these white lines are indicative that the picture is recent enough, from 2007 onwards, and the subject submarine has passive flank sonar on below the marked location.
These three pictures last year would be among the most recent taken of a Han class, all indicating the improved type that has the passive flank sonar. I sort of notice some differences in the conning tower and markings on the body, one such difference is one sub have white rimmed windows, while the other is dark. This might seem to suggest there might be at least two 091G out there.
Compared to early Han pics, they seem to have this dark, smooth rubber coating not unlike the one we saw in the new Yuan.
