PLAN Torpedos

The "rocket" torpedo appears to have a turbojet engine (judging by the protrusion at the bottom) so should have very long range compared to say VLA.

That weapon is fairly old, I remember seeing footage of it almost ten years ago.

It is slant launched from a standard YJ-83 canister, and can equip basically any YJ-83 equipped vessel (054As, 056As etc)

It's actually so old that they've offered it for export (specs here to keep in mind are likely export grade)

Right, thanks. I asked because I noted the mine-detail, but I tend to differentiate it from an encapsulated torpedo, although they are related applications.

So presumably there is another VLS-compatible rocket assisted LWT in service with PLAN?

No, the Yu-8 at this stage is only known to be used from the H/AKJ-16. We have not seen any imagery suggesting a rocket launched torpedo is in use with UVLS on any platform.

I suspect PLAN will want to keep UVLS clear for air defence, antiship and land-attack ordnance, but this is my own speculation. Type 052D and 055 can still perform ASW via embarked helicopters or in self defence using their deck-mounted launchers.
