Sure looks like VLS Cells there aft of the helo deck to me.

Hard to say how many VLS cells are there, but if they are the new ones, they may carry YJ-18 anti-ship missiles, HQ-9 SAMs or CJ-10 land attack cruise missiles

This is going to be a strong upgrade for the Chinese Sovs.
Looks more like a big cover for the hole than actual VLS modules already installed. So, we should wait for at least a month or so to see what's what.

And if they indeed gonna replace the Moskit, what'd they do with the existing stock?

I wouldn't be surprised if they've started being decommissioned .

Very good point, I understand that China also bought quite big number of Moskit missiles together with the 2 + 2 Sovs

you could be right, wooow 96 modern VLS, 50% more than 052D

No, there is no way the Sovs have space for 96 VLS.

They'll be lucky to fit in 48 VLS overall... more likely we'll see only 32 overall. A simple look at the Sovremenny class vs the 052D's VLS or even 054A's VLS will show the limitations.

In order to pack that much heat major reworkd - ie. removal of several above-deck superstructure - will be necessary to free up enough real estate to install the required VLS wells. While it might be feasible purely on technicality standpoint, but not economical, besides such rework will undoubtedly take the ship off the battle order for quite a long time.

The problem is, you're talking about half of the East Sea Fleet's DDG taken out of battle order for an extended period of time, even when they rotate 2 to undergo work each time that's still a quarter of the DDG components took leave. Given the reality in terms of East Sea Fleet faces (war plan on Taiwan now once again on the table), those 4 Sovremenny class DDGs won't have the luxury to enjoy a facelift that's even more extensive then the one 136 now undertake .
