The ship's 130 mm guns are the AK-130-MR-184. The system includes a computer control system with electronic and television sighting. The gun can be operated in fully automatic mode from the radar control system, under autonomous control using the turret mounted Kondensor optical sighting system and can also be laid manually. Rate of fire is between 20 and 35 rounds/min.

Weapon Description

The AK-130-MR-184 Artillery System is intended to engage sea, coastal, and aerial targets, including low flying anti-ship missiles. The system is designed for the medium and large displacement ships.

It comprises the AK-130 Gun Mount, the MR-184 Fire Control Radar System, and the ammunition set.

In terms of firing rate, amount of ammunition ready for firing, and survivability, the system has no analogies in the world. The system features fire delivery with control from the radar system or using turret-mounted optical sight, fixed ammunition ensuring high fire rate and reliability, high degree of automation , high jamming immunity, high accuracy of target coordinates determination, two radar wave bands, laser range finder and automatic TV tracking unit.

It's actually pretty impressive. Each barrel in the AK-130 can deliver the listed rounds per minute.
So it's really 40-70 rounds per minute for each gun mount.

Considering each single gun of an Mk-45 mount has a rate of fire of about 20 rounds per minute, each AK-130 mount can effectively deliver the NGFS equivalent of a ticonderoga or spruance.
A single sovremenny with forward and aft AK-130 can deliver twice the NGFS of a ticonderoga or spruance!

the sovremenny's formidable gunfire support capability is a possible boon that may keep it in service for many years to come. Personally I'd like to see the PLAN develop a double barrelled stealthy mount of their reverse engineered and modernized AK-130 (PJ-38). PJ-38 is supposed to be able to fire a variety of precision guided and extended range munitions, and naturally would be lighter, more reliable, etc than the legacy version.
Strap in a pair of PJ-38s in one stealthy turret ala AK-130, and if they modify a few later 055s to be fitted with "double" PJ-38s fore and aft like sovremenny/tico/spruance, they will have a ship with a NGFS platform equal or even superior to the two AGS which zumwalt can offer, considering total rate of fire/shells on target.

And best part is, the total system should be lighter than the original AK-130.

But I doubt PLAN have such a pressing need for NGFS that their vanilla PJ-38 can't handle.

Most probably they will need it beyond after 10 years - with the growing interests in African nations

Man! that SSN 22 is a serious serious missile!! Unless you're in a CVN or some very large ship getting hit by one of these is almost a guaranteed kill.

Hihi... Its a very very serious looking missile :)

Thats why the Russians are impressive, made up for lesser in cutting edge technology with bigger & higher chance kill probability!

The Chinese have their own versions as well, the YJ-12. Read
