Latest pics from HSH (maybe he vacationed in Hainan) showing the two 054A sisters, the 167 Shenzhen, and no less significant the 885 replenishment tanker (technically the largest ship in the PLAN) and the 888 latest replenishment ship. 885 and 888 are among the blue water replenishment ships stationed in Sanya.

Re: New base for the Type 094 subs?

Moreover, you dont need to be a rocket scientist to realise what China's ultimate goal is; develop a navy strong enough to protect China's shipping lanes - hence this modernisation of the navy, air force and the naval base in Sanya.

Actually the more specific end-objective is to reign West Pacific along the 180 degree line, as well as the Indian Ocean.:china:

Re: New base for the Type 094 subs?

One of the biggest bobos in sub history is the fact that the Seawolf is incapable of VLS launches, a massive oversight that led to this being corrected with the Virginia class. The 688I or Improved Los Angeles class is capable of VLS launches, as opposed to the original 688 which does not. The Tomahawks are fired through VLS tubes just behind the nose holding the sonar. Having the VLS tubes frees the torpedo tubes for real torpedoes which is an advantage if the sub has to suddenly face an opponent.

Going back to the Xia, at least we know in 2005 that the sub went into a refit based on the GE image in Qingdao. Its clear from the picture that a new propeller is fitted (shrouded), the power plant section is opened and so is the section at the torpedo room.
Actually, the Sea Wolf class can launch Tomohawk missiles. They launch them out of the 660mm torpedo tubes.

Theoretically, they could carry 50 such missiles on a mission that required it. Clearly, they would never do this, they would always retain enough topredoes to defend themselves. But they certainly are more than capable of carrying more than 12 Tomohawks to launch in this manner.

In this regard (and in almost all others) the Sea Wolf class exceeds the capabilities of either the LA ADCAP boats or the Virginia class boats.

we've already talked about the hainan island for few million years, why dont we start on some oversea bases that the chinese are quickly building up. The ones in pakistan is clearly building up quickly and already became semi permanent supply posts of chienese ships. Since china now has a periodical anti piracy program, ports like Gwadar would be visited often by Chinese ships. WHy dont we discuss about possible future chinese oversea bases?
good Idea - my Posting #75 was not to repeat the pic of "Woody Island" which we have in Post #001, it was to add the SU-fighter of PLANAF with the airfield this fighter used - the "Woody Island Airfield" :china:

I asked to discuss of oversea bases and gwadar several times but nobody said nothing. By the way I believe that in the short term cinese ships could host for several days in Gwadar, if they whant a sort of regular presence in Arabic sea. Onother port, as happened last week (just for several hours) could be Aden (Yemen).

Sanya Naval Base from google earth

The updated Sanya image of Google Earth appears to have the following:

A sub about 98 meters in length.

Two warships about 155 meters in length.

One warship about 178 meters in length.

I suspect these are:

A Type 093 sub.

The two 052C destroyers 170 and 171 --- the VLS appears visible.

One of the replenishment ships.

Note demagnetization facility.
