Great set of pictures this shows clearly that China is not just building a port and runway but the entire infrastructure to establish a self sufficient air force and naval base outside of mainland China

When China was looking for the down MH370 it became clear that China really needs overseas bases to port at its just not good enough to send replenishment tankers you need to dock you need rest and you need to relax it's important for moral of sailors

This will give China good experience on how to build up oversea bases and how it's done start at home then in the South China Sea and in the future we could see such bases in foreign country's?

It's a step in that direction China is learning as it goes if today they could do this in South China Sea they could in the future do it somewhere in the Indian Ocean or Latin America?

Very interesting and I would be curious to know if it will have a permanent naval presence by the looks of the work going its not unlikely

With a military bases on Woody Island, and on expanded Johnson reef-island, China gets 200 mile EEZs around them, and the military muscle to back them up. Nifty way to change facts on the ground/water.

The reclaimed Johnson Reef island will probably be a major base for China in the SCS but they cannot legally claim an EEZ around it because it's not a natural island. On the other hand, international law doesn't count for much in the SCS so China might well try to enforce an EEZ around it.

I must say that we had seen much more dynamic developement some 70+ years ago when it comes to creating airfield out of tiny reefs so there's not much to be surprised knowing how much the tech moved on in that time... And people only dreamed about sending something into space at the time...

Actually, China doesn't need to claim an EEZ from Johnson Reef. Taiping Island is the only natural island that definitely qualifies for an EEZ in the Spratlys and if we adhere to the One China policy, that EEZ already encompasses Johnson Reef. So if we use that argument, Filipino charges about reclamation on Johnson or Fiery violating their EEZ isn't a clear cut argument. As for violation of CoC, that was never binding and another article has shown even Vietnam has been island building within the last decade so it's not like other parties have not violated CoC themselves.

Yes, but Vietnam didn't enlarge the land/reef features, it only placed buildings on them. Big difference.
