The machine guns on the islands can still serve a purpose of driving off marauding fishing boats or adventurers looking to stir up trouble. The Philippine and Vietnamese navies are still so antiquated that the machine guns can be useful against them. I think one reason we haven't seen any Chinese activists try to land on a Vietnamese island is because of those guns and the soldiers on them, as well as the island's great distance from China.

Here are some of the Vietnamese-held islands and forts.

Thank you! The bases and forts remind me of outposts on the American Frontier. Designing them must've been a fun task, trying to put as much communications, radar, and living space into a tiny building that is still able to resist rough seas and storms. I wonder if the forts are evacuated ahead of a major storm. I wonder what life is like on them. The Vietnamese turn each resupply mission into a huge PR and morale-boosting visit. They have singing, dancing, women, important officials, letters from home, etc. No doubt the presence of women is one of the biggest things to look forward to on these resupply visits!

I haven't see any pictures of resupply missions to the Chinese forts in the Spratlys so they must not make such a big deal out of them.

Do you think these island structures have basement/underground portions below the island foundation, or just the surface portion?
