This highlights that the South Sea Fleet is China only option for nuclear submarines and future carrier force. And highlights the importance for integrating Taiwan back to the Mainland. Having Taiwan is an extreme strategic advantage for its naval forces. As they won't be all clustered in Hainan. There current forces are really restraint at the moment, having Taiwan gives them more flexibility, and faster deep water access for its nuclear submarines forces. They have more to gain than loose, so its not all just about "reuniting China."

So Taiwan is now in an excellent position to negotiate a return to China. It has a lot to offer and is not yet militarily insignificant.

To me, that points to 2 possibilities: a protected headquarters for the South Sea Fleet, or protected ammunition storage (for all the weapons that the South Sea Fleet uses, possibly including nuclear weapons) or both (HQ + ammo storage).
Spartan95, great analysis! I agree with you, favoring the ammo-storage hypothesis. Note below that there are tunnels going into the mountain on the north side of the peninsula, away from the ships. This indicates they expect to use tunnels for something special that is not a ship and I'm guessing it's ammunition, especially nuclear weapons.

Taiwan has always meant a lot more than reuniting China. It will be the crown jewel in any PRC leader's resume. It will be the final triumph over the KMT and the ghost of Chiang Kai-Shek. Taiwan's return to the China will add a lot to China's economy in terms of technology, research breadth, and human capital. It will expand the tax base. You know those images of Chinese celebrating in Tianamen Square when it was announced they won the right to host the 2008 Summer Olympics? That is nothing compared to how Chinese will feel when Taiwan returns to China.

They don't want to vanquish KMT.

CCP and KMT have the crazy relationship ever since the 20s. those old CCP and KMT guys are more like comrades in arms then anything. ideologies aside they (the old dudes who went to Whompo military academy together) deeply respect each other and genuinely believe they were working for a common cause (re-vitalizing china). but different methods. heck back then some of them even held dual membership cards.

I sincerely believe if CCP were over zealous in land-reform and KMT had progressive elements in power and not Chiang Kai Shek who slaughtered the communists in '24, then I believe chinese civil war would never happened and it would be a much stronger position today.
