Yes it is the first time Here is Henri K take on the subject

Three Chinese warships, including the new destroyer 173 Changsha of Type 052D , dropped the moorings on Sunday morning at the port of Sanya and are currently heading to Europe.

They will participate in the first phase of the Sino-Russian naval exercises "Joint Sea 2017" which will take place at the end of July in St. Petersburg and Kaliningrad in the Baltic Sea.

This is the first time that this last generation Chinese destroyer landed in the region. This second set of Type 052D is accompanied by the frigate 571 Yuncheng of Type 054A and oil-tanker 964 Luomahu of Type 903A standard composition of a Chinese flotilla vessels with two senior and logistical support ship.

The two destinations of the Chinese fleet in the Baltic Sea

The route of the Chinese fleet has not been detailed at the moment, but it should logically cross the Indian Ocean and the Suez Canal to enter the Mediterranean Sea before crossing the Strait of Gibraltar to Channel, the North Sea then the Baltic.

The main topic of this new edition of joint naval exercises between China and Russia, organized once a year since 2012, is the rescue at sea and the protection of maritime economic activities.

The "Sea Sea 2017" will be separated into two parts - apart from the maneuvers in the Baltic Sea, the two navies are also planning to deploy in the Sea of Japan and Sea of Okhotsk by the end of September.

In 2016, Chinese and Russian naval forces conducted joint exercises in the South China Sea, which included for the first time the subject of the amphibious assault on an island.

The choice of locations for these military maneuvers, in the potential areas of tension for both, clearly shows mutual support between the two countries, but does not necessarily mean an intention to intervene jointly in the event of a problem, Not at the moment.

Note that this is the first participation in an "overseas" exercise for a Type 052D destroyer. The building, 173 Changsha , floated in late December 2012 and admitted to active service by the Southern Fleet in August 2015, moves in 6,000 tons and now represents the most advanced first-class ship in China. But it will soon be dethroned with the imminent arrival of the Type 055 , a new class of destroyer (cruiser according to NATO) of 12 000 tons, the launching of the first building would be expected by the end of June.

Equipped with a Type 346A AESA faceplate radar and a wide array of weapons in its 64 vertical launch silos, the Type 052D is a new generation of multi-role Chinese destroyer with a penchant for anti-aircraft missions . Five vessels of this class are currently in active service and at least seven others are in armaments.

According to a source close to the case, the Chinese navy has ordered 8 additional hulls, based on 18 buildings acquired previously. The Type 052D will probably become the most constructed destroyer class in China.

I notice that Henri K keeps saying the 052D is "6,000 tons". I used to think he was referring to 052D's standard displacement which would be in the range for a ship with a ~7,500 ton full displacement, but now in the same paragraph here he refers to the 055 as being "12,000 tons" displacement which is commonly thought of as being the 055's full displacement. Not sure what is going on here.

I think that is what is going on, though he also often says 054A is a 4000 ton class ship, despite its full displacement having been described from a state media source as only slightly over that.

In the case of 052D, I am a bit skeptical about the 7500 ton full displacement figure, I think it's been thrown around quite a few places but I think I first saw it on wikipedia. Given 052Ds dimensions and taking the 6000 ton figure as standard displacement think 052D's full displacement might be smaller than 7500 tons, maybe under/only approaching 7000 tons full.

TBH I have long suspected this as well, since the structural changes from 052C to 052D seem to me to confer no real increase in tonnage, and possibly even a decrease in tonnage compared to the 052C. And to be perfectly even more honest I have been going with the flow of "7,500" tons for the 052D to avoid the inevitable fanboi outrage that a 500 ton shave would probably elicit on SDF since this little nitpick of mine is not worth enough for me to argue about in detail.

In any case this doesn't really solve the problem of Henri K's quote of 6,000 tons since I don't see why he would use a standard displacement figure for one ship and then in the same paragraph use a full displacement figure for another ship.
