A naval flotilla of the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) has conducted a live-fire drill in the Mediterranean Sea “honing their combat skills” en route to a joint exercise with the Russian Navy in the Baltic Sea, the Chinese Ministry of Defense (MoD)

on July 12.

Another PLAN flotilla consisting of three warships is also currently cruising the Mediterranean Sea. The flotilla is on a “goodwill voyage” to more than 20 countries and arrived at the Italian port of Civitavecchia on July 11 for a port call.

I assume there is also a flotilla in the gulf of Aden - though there were some reports of one of the ships en route to the Baltic having a problem and being "substituted" by one of the ships from the Aden flotilla.

With yet another small fleet on the way to Djibouti, keeping up with PLAN overseas deployments is becoming complicated.

It would be really nice if there was a website "following" the currently deployed ships and their planned routes.
"The PLAN flotilla consists of the Type 052D Luyang III-class guided-missile destroyer Hefei; the Type 054A Jiangkai II-class guided missile frigate Yuncheng; and the Type 903A Quiandaohu-class replenishment ship Luomahu. The ships, belonging to the South Sea Fleet responsible for PLAN operations in the South China Sea, set off from their home port in Sanya, Hainan province, on June 18.

Following the successful completion of the drill, the ships continued their journey to the Baltic Sea, where they will participate in the annual Sino-Russian naval exercise, dubbed Joint Sea. "

The PLAN is showing up more and more all over the world...and that is to be expected.

They are building a first class blue water fleet and have SLOCs that reach all over the world now...so exercising and being in those places makes sense for them and is very understandable.

Drills with Russia on the Baltic Sea are pretty stupid idea I must say though. It won't help Chinese image in that part of Europe - it will only make it worse.
Well, we difer.

China wants to be seen with its Navy. There are SLOCs that extend into the Med and all the way around Russia up there for them.

They intend to do business with the world and therefore see the whole of Europe, Central, South America, Africa...and the US and Canada as trading partners where their products go to, and come from.

So they will show their new Navy in all of those places to try and project the image of defending...or being in place to defend...their SLOCs.

We just are not used to any other large country but the US and its allies doing this regularly and I believe we had best get used to it.

...and so long as they do not overtly try and force their will with it...I really do not have a problem with it.

The world is bigger than you imagine. I have nothing against any specific part of Europe and I actually live in that part of Europe that you talk about. BUT that part of Europe or for that matter any part of the world is NOT the whole world. China can not (nobody can) make everybody happy although China cares her image. If someone feels uncomfortable with China conducting drill with Russia, so be it. I am sure you have heard the latest words by the Chinese MoF spoke person "get use to it" when answering question about another incident. That is the Chines altitude applicable in the Baltic sea as well.

China is going to hang up with anyone friendly, other part of Europe or even NATO countries included.
