From USS Ronald Reagan Public Affairs

PACIFIC OCEAN (NNS) -- The aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) and Carrier Air Wing Two departed from the Southern California operating area June 18 to participate in the biennial Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) exercise scheduled June 26 to Aug. 1, in and around the Hawaiian Islands.

RIMPAC is the world's largest international maritime exercise and serves as a unique training opportunity for participating countries to foster and sustain the cooperative relationships and interoperability that are critical to ensure security on the world's oceans.

Reagan and its embarked Carrier Strike Group Nine command staff will work with 46 ships, six submarines, more than 200 aircraft and 25,000 personnel from 23 nations to exercise a wide range of capabilities and demonstrate the inherent flexibility of maritime forces.

"RIMPAC has a long, rich tradition dating back to 1971, so we're incredibly excited to be participating in this important international exercise," said Capt. Christopher Bolt, Reagan's commanding officer. "Every opportunity we have to strengthen relations with our partner countries and exercise cooperative efforts allows us to improve the way in which we provide safety and security for the world's sea lanes."

Reagan last participated in the RIMPAC exercise series in 2010.

Look at that Sea, I mean, it's so blue, so deep blue....

That's where ships belong, that where sailor belong, not some yellow muddy pond near ports....

True... In Chinese it's called "走向深蓝" aka "moving towards the ocean / blue water navy". PLAN is working tremendous effort and what it needs to do now besides building a strong navy, also to gain respect from others.

We also cannot decline the fact that a strong navy is need to defend those "yellow muddy pond" too. They have the 056 series to do the job as well as conventional subs.

The Chinese navy now have completed their ambition of defending the littoral waters, coastal and ports, now moving on to the deep blue sea.

Imagine RIMPAC 2016, with USS Ronald Reagan, CNS Liaoning, INS Vikramaditya, ROKS Dokdo, JDS Izumo, and HTMS Chakri Naruebet all in the mix. A sight to behold.

Some day.. lets see what shakes out in a couple of years..however I doubt if anyone would see HTMS Chakri Naruebet. She's been laid up in port for sometime and seldom goes to sea.

As I stated earlier, the four PLAN vessels rendezvoused with the Singapore Frigate, RSS Intrepdi, and the US Navy Ticonderoga AEGIS crusier USS Chosin, the US AEGIS Destroyer, USS Howard, and two Darussalam Class Patrol Boats from Brunei between Guam and the Philippines. That's where these pictures were taken.

This was according to plan.

The US, Chinese, and Singapore vessels will now travel together to Hawaii as a Joint Task Force. Their rendezvous and their traveling together as a Joint Task Force is actually a part of RIMPAC 2014...but the official exercises off of Hawaii do not start until next week.

We will see all of these vessels actually arrive in Hawaii in the next week and there should be a LOT of pictures of that happening.

Then, the following week, the big exercises are going to start and we should see a lot more good shots from that.

I just noticed Tonga is also participating in RIMPAC.
They are a tiny nation with even fewer assets however it's great that even small countries like that are able to participate with their much larger brethens. I have a lot of respect for them because for such a small nation they conduct regular exercises with much larger forces and they have even sent troops to Afghanistan!

I'm waiting for the USN to post photos of these ships entering Pearl Harbor. Some years ago they published a photo of all the RIMPAC ships in port at Pearl Harbor.

I do not know when this photo was taken up the CVN to the left has Tomcats aboard..so this photo has to be from 2006 or previous years.

I believe the CVN is USS John C Stennis (CVN 74)

In 2006, I know the Carrier was CVN-72, USS Abraham Lincoln, and it did not have Tomcats aboard for the exercises.

The caption with that 2004 photo was:

RIMPAC 2004 said:
Naval ships from seven participating nations lie pier side at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii (HI), awaiting the start of Exercise RIM OF THE PACIFIC (RIMPAC) 2004 at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard. Identifiable ships are, clock wise left, the US Navy (USN) Nimitz Class Aircraft Carrier USS JOHN C. STENNIS (CVN 74), the USN Amphibious Assault Ship USS TARAWA (LHA 1), and a USN Whidbey Island LSD 41 Class Dock Landing Ship, plus the memorial battleship USS Missouri (BB 63) (foreground) and the battleship USS Arizona (BB 39) Memorial. This years exercise includes seven participating nations.

Here is another US Navy picture of Pearl Harbor from RIMPAC 2006. It's from a different angle and is similar to the pic you posted...but it is the Lincoln and there are a lot of other vessels that are differnet between the two.

The US Navy caption that went with the RIMPAC 2006 photo reads:

RIMPAC 2006 said:
060701-N-8157C-291 Pearl Harbor (July 1, 2006) - An aerial view of ships involved with Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2006. Eight nations are participating in RIMPAC 2006, the world's largest biennial maritime exercise. Conducted in the waters off Hawaii, RIMPAC 2006 brings together military forces from Australia, Canada, Chile, Peru, Japan, the Republic of Korea, the United Kingdom and the United States. U.S. Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist Class Dennis C. Cantrell (RELEASED)

One of the reasons RIMPAC is based out of Pearl Harbor is because Pearl Harbor has a large ship yard and maintenance/repair facility.

At RIMPAC 2012, the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermedaite Maintenance Facilty (PHNSY & IMF) performed 123 repairs (most of them minor) to ships of numerous nations patricipating in the exercises.

My guess is that each participating Navy would pay its own hip expenses etc. Don't expect the host Navy the USN to cover expenses for them.

I am curious about naval expenses for a PLAN trip to Hawaii.

How are the expenses calculated; from manpower to ship by ship expenses. I am calculating anywhere from a few millions USD per ship

Just curious about the figures... Can anybody advise perhaps?

Thanks.
