PLAN invited to participate in RIMPAC for first the time (2014)

... in protest to such cold shoulder treatment. Think about it, such low-grade access won't teach the PLAN anything new anyway.
Seriously?

They get invited for the first time ever. And they are involved in maritime interdiction missions, and a 1st ever Hosptial ship exercise?

That's not the "cold shoulder" in the least. The cold shoulder would be to not invite them at all...or when inviting them to have them sit in port in Hawaii and observe only, or to go out but stay 20 miles or more out of the way.

Instead, they are going to be a part of a Joint Task Force and conduct realistic exercises with those forces.

I would hope most Chinese would recognize and welcome the opportunity to be a part of the largest and most involved multi-nation naval exercises on earth, and therefore put their best foot forward.

We shall see which combatants they actually send...but I am willing to bet it is not Luda class.

A Type 054 and either 112 or 113 at the least.

A Type 054A and a Type 052B or "C" or Type 051C at the best.

Well only 113 was open to the public, and only the outside was open, no access to corridors, bridge, never mind the CIC lol.

Most of the photos don't show anything new, but here they are anyway heh:

Thanks for these pics my friend, I somehow missed them here on this thread.

Awesome...and I am envious for sure...hehehe!

113 and 112 are still good ships...lots of capability. I just wish they would swap out the forward missile launcher for an 18 cell HQ-10.

That Type 054A, "547" looks awesome. Those two ships right there could easily go to RIMPAC.

New Zealand got a somewhat cold shoulder a few years back when their ships were directed to dock in Honolulu Harbor for RIMPAC instead of Pearl Harbor due to the anti-nuclear stance of NZ.

If that were the case, CN ships would simply turnaround and sail home, and the cool war gets a few degrees cooler.

Yea...but my point is that nothing like that happened or is happening. They have been invited to attend and to participate. And the participation is in two forms.

1) They are going to conduct Hospital Ship exercises which have never been done before.

2) Their combatants are going to be part of a task force doing maritime interdiction. Originally they talked about a humanitarian exercise.

I believe it will be a fine set of events and exercises and should help thaw relations, at least at that level.

Yeah, and the main event of any RIMPAC is still the war game, which PLAN got no chance in hell getting to see, or taking part. No surprise because the US policy makers have already marked China "the enemy", alas still skirting away from openly admitting it like against USSR during the Cold War.

Mind you Jeff, we're in "Cold War, Round 2". If you want Sino-US relations to thaw or improve, then have US muzzle the Philippines, Vietnam and Japan instead, which'd be far more effective.

In any case, here's an analogy: PLAN was invited for the cocktail, but not for the main Ball Room event, only to watch the dinner and dance from the windows outside, in the rain...

The events PLAN got invited ain't something they never done before in real life, just not as many as they might wish to be, alas still won't change the fact that very little of new can be learned, of which could benefit them in their modernisation drive.

Mwyrum, even if the PLAN was invited to join the more high intensity high tech war games, the PLAN probably would have declined. Both the PLAN and USN and its allies know neither side wants to mingle in that regard, where both sides have the potential to give away sensitive info and signals.

So it is more like the USN inviting the PLAN to a ball but not inviting it to the after party knowing the PLAN wouldn't want to be there and that other guests at the after party wouldn't be comfortable with the PLAN there either.

I'm pretty sure the PLAN will have representatives that are able to view some of the higher intensity war games.

The fact that China is sending a pretty huge Flotilla says it all

If China felt they were being side lined they would down right refuse or send a older FFG that is not the case

CCP is very mature and sensible they know what they are doing they doing everyone is watching they are doing the right thing

And let's remember the invitation came from US to attend RIMPAC they could easily have not asked at all that's the cold shoulder

It's like someone is decent enough to send me invitation and I turn round and refuse that would be childish and immature behaviour

And who says China will not be part of the war games they are taking part means they are taking part

If someone sends invitation it's only good gesture to accept even if it's for desert maybe one day you will hold the main dinner no need to be so greedy and up tight no need for so much pride that will get you no where

This is news from about a week ago, but I'm not sure if any posts here confirmed any of the ships that the PLAN will be sending, so I thought I might post it.

The PLAN is sending a destroyer, a frigate, an oiler, and a hospital ship. A list of participating assets provided by US Pacific Fleet indicates that the frigate will be the Jiangkai II (Type 054A)-class guided-missile frigate, Liuzhou. The Chinese flotilla will be embarking two Z-8 Changhe and Z-9 Haitun helicopters, and a naval diving unit also will be present.

So that's the frigate confirmed to be a 054A, but still no word on which destroyer is being sent...

(On an unrelated note, I'm jealous of Bltizo for being able to go aboard Qingdao. I was in Sydney during the International Fleet Review last year which Qingdao attended, and the next morning during open day, we were told that Qingdao set sail for New Zealand during the night not long after the fireworks......)
