PLAN invited to participate in RIMPAC for first the time (2014)

These 2 PLAN ships are in NZ water now (Fri 11 Oct) until Tuesday next week, unfortunately they are in Auckland, roughly 700 km away from me. If it was in Wellington, definitely I would go, to have a look as my office is only 5-7 minutes away from Wellington harbour.

I'll be checking them out tomorrow, so I'll post any pics if it interests people, but if they let people on board they obviously won't let us into sensitive areas which we all want to see like the CIC.

Hi I just posted some pictures about IFR 2013... here...

Well only 113 was open to the public, and only the outside was open, no access to corridors, bridge, never mind the CIC lol.

Most of the photos don't show anything new, but here they are anyway heh:
OUTSTANDING pics, Bltizo! Very, very good. Thanks for posting them all!

Provided both ships are structurally sound, smoothness of weld and ship building technique will make little difference to seaworthiness. Displacement, freeboard, windage, righting moment in pitch and row have a lot more to do with it. I would expect 052 to be more seaworthy than 054A just because the older ship is bigger. That's more important than the 12 or so years which separates them.

Maybe seaworhtiness wasn't the right term but you're comparing apples and oranges. Of course I know size and displacement matters when it comes to seakeeping and seaworthiness however what I was trying to imply was if the welding of a particular class is much better than the older generation it means the shipyards have had significant improvement in the build quality of successive generation which is a good thing since ship welding is the core of making god ships. If they have improve on that then everything else will also.

US imposes restrictions to PLAN participations in RIMPAC 2014

PLAN plans to send the hospital ship (Peace Ark) and a combat fleet including a destroyer, a frigate, and a supply ship. The combat fleet would be designated to a task force comprising of four navies including US, France, and Brunei. The task force would be commanded by US coast guard officer. Japanese general would not give commands to PLAN fleet.

And yet the PLAN involvement will be greater than what was initially thought.

When first announced, it was thought that the PLAN vessels would basically only be involved in humanitarian type exercises. As it is, they will be more involved than that. The Peace Ark will participate in medical exchanges with other participants, including conducting exercises with a US hospital ship. The PLAN oiler, frigate and the destroyer will join in a maritime interdiction operational task force with other nations.

I am interested to see if the FFG is a Type 054A (I believe it will be) and if the DDG is one of the newer ones, like a Tyype 052C. More likely that the DDG will be 112 or 113, or maybe one of the Type 051Cs. We shall see.

So instead of a Japanese general, China navy ships would be commanded by a civilian agency officer...?

Best bet just their "tier-2" DDG and FFG, those interim designs, instead of the "tier-1" combat vessels now in serial production, since SAR and anti-piracy won't require the latest mission packages anyway.

All things considered, the PLAN could send a couple of the surviving Luda Class for this in protest to such cold shoulder treatment. Think about it, such low-grade access won't teach the PLAN anything new anyway.

Sending old ships would be sending a poor signal. We've heard how seriously the PLAN are taking RIMPAC. While they're not out to make themselves look hostile, they're not going to make themselves send harmless by sending antiquated ships either.

Considering ships like 054A have done exercises with USN and many other navies before and is a common sight off Aden, I expect the FFG to be an 054A. The DDG is more up for grabs, but I wouldn't be surprised at an 052C being sent, just to show that the PLAN is indeed modern.

PLAN does care about how it is perceived, despite the PLAs overall conservativeness in showing off new military developments. And 052Cs have been in service many years now, so it is hardly new technology.

And I don't think the PLAN considers this a cold shoulder at all. On the contrary, simply being invited to participate at RIMPAC is a big step itself. Even if they were invited to participate in a more complex part of RIMPAC I doubt the PLAN would accept due to fear of revealing sensitive information during a more advanced exercise.

Great picture Blitzo did you personally take those shots? 881 looks amazingly new and in top condition even although it's the older one of those replenishment tankers

The ships looks like they are in tip top condition!
