so there is 2 Type 903 ships 886 and 887 in service and we are seeing now 3 Type 903A under construction so total of 5 Qiandaohu class replenishment ships?
what upgrade does Type 903A have over Type 903, actually maybe its too early to say

Doesn't seem to be that many upgrades. I guess the rumour of 40,000 ton AOR is not true. All we know right now is that there is one AOR launched from GSI and another under construction at HD. There maybe more, but I don't know.
imo, all the large PLAN ships should be designed to be able to hold a Z-8. The other issue as always with PLAN is the availability of helicopters. You might only have a Z-9 or not even one helicopter you can put on these new ships.

All those large replenishment ships are named after major lakes, HU, meaning lake, same pronunciation as the Chinese president's surname. China is able to do this due to its immense size, since it has countless cities (DDG's), counties (Frigates and Corvettes), lakes (large replenishment ships) and mountains (LPDs and similar vesels) to name all the ships. Somehow a dark joke came in mind. How about tiny Japan? Nicknames of earthquakes from the past? LOL
Japan's modern naval tradition runs much deeper than china's. their naming scheme for ships hasn't changed since the days of late 19th/early 20th IJN days. and it is beautiful.
PLAN' scheme is rather dull for its surface combatants. IMHO even the scheme during days of Qin Imperial Navy (Beiyang/Nanyang) is better. very artistic names. They should bring back the names for these paired ships like.. Chao yong / Yang Wei/ Ding Yuan/ Zhenyuan.

OK, I am not bashing Japan on this one, but PLAN's ships dose have a doctrine of how they are to be named.
Puls, historical people's name for dedicated training ships; DDGs only named after provincial capital city, normal cities for FFGs, counties for Corvettes level of boats;
Japan's naming scheme I believe have something to do with their own mythology names (including mythology concepts)?

Actually naming of modern vessels using city names begun with foundation of the very first republic. To this day, ROC naval ships are still named with mainland city names. One of which is still controversial, Di Hua, of one Lafayette class. It is an old name used for Urumqi, begun about 300 years ago. It is short for educating and civilizing, both verbs, hinting the locals are barbarians.

When China in history names anything with 'beautiful' artistic names, it always implys China (the official) has not master that technology yet.
I look this way, when Qing dynasty names shore cannon artistic name 红夷大炮 Hong yi da pao, and in some cases, each cannon have its own name (they are so few), China is in deep trouble; when US names her battleship with dull name like Missouri, named after non-innovative doctrine of names, it implys she is at the way to systematic dominance of the field (in this case, navy) it dully named.
