Steam plants consume much more fuel than diesel plants of the same power. I suppose the thought is that Chinese diesel engines are not powerful enough to propel such a large ship at the required speed. But is it not more likely that fuel is saved and experience gained and that the ship will use a large number of medium speed diesel engines in a IEP configuration?The Type 901 is thought to have 4 steam turbine engines, which would give it a top speed of around 25 knots, enabling it to keep pace with Chinese aircraft carriers like the Liaoning.
