Let me tell you, the heads at PLAN CAN'T hide something as big as the Varyag, even if they wanted to install sensors and radar on it, everyone will notice it. Unless they move the ship fast enough to a remote location it's still impossible to hide what they are doing to the ship. They can't even move the ship without alerting everyone at Dalian. You think they'll do it overnight? Ha, once everyone sees a bunch of tug boats going toward Varyag the secret is out.
The only reason I can see PLAN secretly putting sensors and radar abroad the ship is, them claiming that they'll use Varyag like an amusment park. BUT they can't say that because the area Varyag is currently in is on Chinese Military property. Go ask anyone whose been to Dalian, the area near Varyag is restricted to military only.. it's a damn naval base unoffically

Oh I see. I get your point. But from all the pics we've seen so far, no further work has been done to the island...yet. I still think that PLAN is trying to install the radar and sensors secretly since you said that thay can't claim that they'll use Varyag as an amusment park because it's on a military property. How? No one knows for sure.I got to this conclusion because all the pics we've seen so far give us kind of a strong evidence that Varyag will be used for military intentions. But what is taking PLAN so long to install the radar and sensors? My guess is that they are planning to do it away from public view.

Well they would certainly like to do it away from public but how will they install something obvious as radars, com systems and other sensors without anyone noticing?
I don’t see any way they can pull it off…

My guess is that they aren’t started whit sensor installation because they still didn’t finish construction work. Varyag’s hull wasn’t in best condition when they bought it and whit engine installment, electric wiring, anticorrosion work etc. they probably have they hand full for time being… And that job is probably going weary slow because they wont to learn as much as possible about Varyag’s design and construction tech.
Once they finish that they will start installing sensors and equipment…

i disagree, radar and sensors are useless without a powerplant, the ship is dead; you don't consider installing TV in your new house if it doesn't have power do you?

also, radar and sensors is only required if the ship is going to be fully operational; we do no know of china intention with it, for all it may be just for trial, training, evaluation or just trying to gain XP on handling a carrier at dock. we cannot assume just because the military have link to the ship that it would be fully operational.

if it does has plans of operational use; why we haven't since progress is more like an issue of difficulty in finding a means to power the ship than trying to "secretly add radar" that won't have any power to work...

it is not on military property. you can easily find civilian ship on the very same dock section from time to time. unless you are gonna tell me those supertankers and transport ship are military spy ship of some kind...

I still think they may still be doing some kind of engineering analysis inside the ship itself. That could take a couple of years to look into every area of the ship and measure and analyze, etc. Putting modern equipment into it would probably be one of the last things they do. I believe China's looking at this ship as a basis of building their own version of it. And as such, they're going to pick the insides clean for a couple of years, studying every detail.

Actually on DT, Gary was saying that the Australians knew PLAN was test installing sensors on Varyag or something like that.

I agree. We can tell that they have done significant work to bring the hull and the outer surfaces up to par...including the addition of the apparent zinc chromate coating for the non-skid surface, whihch looks in these later pictures to now be covered over with some kind of final coating.

Internally, we do not know what has been going on, except that we know they have been working in there for some time. I expect the installation of the exterior fittings (antennas, dishes, weapons systems, etc.) will be the last thing they do in any run up to operational status.

and the island istn't paintet without some red primer - so it seems, they want to do something there (installations of sensors like radar?), which normaly should be done befor the painting is finished ....

Re: Latest Varyag Pics

There are 2 rectangular white objects just below the red island structure in the last picture.

Any ideas?

When that pic was posted a while ago in china, someone said those are life saving equipments which can be found on US carriers as well. But I still fail to find any similar visual similarities.

zyun8288' I serve on 5 USN CV's perhaps I can help:)
Could be anything. Liferafts. Liferaft containers on USN CV's are shaped like a barrel. Or just a plastic cover over a duct. In the case of a USN CVN those white boxes you see are magazines for flares.

See the white boxes by the island???

Lifeboats, flairs, chaff, ventalation, etc. All sorts of possibilities. But those particular items on the Varyag have been there for a long time.

Even with the slow porgress, we have seen a number of intriguing things happen with the Varyag over the last 12-18 months. Dry dock, new paint scheme in PLAN colors, the apparent non-skid zinc chromate surface (now seems to be painted over), etc. We shall just have to be patient I guess...though it is frustrating.

I personally believe that if the PLAN intends to make her operational in any way, even as a pure training vessel, that they will showcase her in front of the world during the 2008 Olympic festivities and games in China.
