Regarding new pic by SwimmerXC
Here are closer looks at the Varyag and the two 51Cs. Notice how much cleaner (at least to me) the main deck of the Varyag is looking from this angle.

Well, swimmer, that certainly looks like a newer pic of the Varyag. The deck, which had most recently been primed with some sort of zinc chromate looking cover for anti-skid, now seems to be painted over and looking much more ready for use...as far as a protective coating goes.

Also, I clearly see two 51Cs in final outfitting there. NO doubt in my mind that like the 52Cs and 52Bs, the PLAN will launch and commission two of them. I guess we will see at some point which designs they actually put into some serial production so they have a sufficient number of the newer, modern vessels.
it looks to me that 115 is completely ready, whereas 116 still has a little work left to do. But yeah, thanks for the observation on varyag, Jeff.

You are welcome. I believe the 51Cs are going to be capable AAW ships, but not as capable at the 52Cs in that regard. It would be interesting to see if the battle system the 52Cs have, particularly as regards the AAW coverage, is data linked to the 51C's, the 52Bs and ultimately the new Russian vessels like US AEGIS system can do with, say the Kidds.

I also believe that the Varyag is slowly being made more and more servicable. Only time will tell to what degree...but I would not be surprised to see something visible occur with her on the PLAN's part during the Olympic's time frame.

another idea that has been knocked about is that 052C is data linked with land based HQ-9s and 051C is data linked with land based S-300. Not sure about the data linking between HQ-9 and S-300 systems (whether land or sea based) though.

Seems like that would necessarily tie the naval platfroms too close to land. I could see in certain engagements and conditions where that was a given where it would be worthwhile...sort of like extending the effectiveness of fighting under land based air cover. But the firther the engagement moved out to sea, the less effective such a measure would obviously become.

much of PLAN strategy revolves around Taiwan as we all know. And part of that is defending against Taiwanese cruise missiles against high level targets such as Shanghai, Shenzhen and Three Gorges Dam. (and yes, Taiwan has threatened repeatedly to attack these areas) So, part of the current use of 052C is too extend the AD protection by a few hundred kms off the shore. At least that's what I get from reading certain Chinese articles.

In the future, you will probably see such type of datalinking between 052C descendents and 054A frigates, but the "Chinese Aegis" is currently still very young and maturing.

True enough as many of these Varyag pics we have seen still no work on radar's and sensors..

As for the light in the hangar. Trust me they nneed the light even in the daytime to see. Espically the way those hangars are configured.

I think PLAN is currently discussing how to install the radar and sensors secretly. And that's why we haven't seen much progress in the past while. PLAN will not let the rest of the world to know their real intentions for Varyag until the ship is operational.

Do you have a source for your claim or is it some wild BS you made up?
Let me tell you, the heads at PLAN CAN'T hide something as big as the Varyag, even if they wanted to install sensors and radar on it, everyone will notice it. Unless they move the ship fast enough to a remote location it's still impossible to hide what they are doing to the ship. They can't even move the ship without alerting everyone at Dalian. You think they'll do it overnight? Ha, once everyone sees a bunch of tug boats going toward Varyag the secret is out.
The only reason I can see PLAN secretly putting sensors and radar abroad the ship is, them claiming that they'll use Varyag like an amusment park. BUT they can't say that because the area Varyag is currently in is on Chinese Military property. Go ask anyone whose been to Dalian, the area near Varyag is restricted to military only.. it's a damn naval base unoffically
