yet, Yuan went undetected.
The Yuan is small enough that it could be built in many, many different places...even under a large building. IN addition, the types of items are similar to other submarines the PLAN had built.

An aircraft carrier is a completely different matter. As I said, onlty a few Chinese shipyards could handle it, and the procurement of parts, metal, etc. are entirely different that what the PLAN has done beofre.

I stand by what I said, and although the Yuan was built in relative secrecy, I do not believe a carrier (at least not a conventional large deck one) could escape notice.

Now...if the PLAN was making some conversion of an already existing container vessel or something like that...they may be able to keep the initial construction and internal outfitting it secret for a time...up until the point that they started building/fabricating/installing the main deck. After that...the cat would be out of the bag.

i agree with Jeff Head, the Yuan is small enough to be built inside a building, they can make the building look like anything from the outside, and a lot less people is required to build it.

A aircraft carrier on the other hand requires much more people, and no matter what secrecy they swear to, someone will talk. and only a few shipyards on the planet have the capability to build ACs, there's enough spy satellites out there that there's at least one looking down at chinese shipyards to see what they are building at the time. and it's not like they need the satellite there at all time, building something that big takes years, just flying by once every few weeks is enough.

Thanks. Nice new pics. Wish we could see the entire length, and especially a closer up view of the aft end.

The tight security, as I understand it, is dock side. We have had fairly good pictures of her, form the air, and from water level, the entire time (but not many from the aft side, though there are some here). Lots of traffic around those shipyards...but no one is getting to see what is going on inside. Understandable for any major military project.

Hard to say. But they are spending a lot of time and money on her to some purpose...that much is clear.

If someone could go inside her and see what they are doing there, it would become much more clear what that eventual purpose is. My guess is, within the next couple of years we will all get to see for ourselves when she either sails herself, or is towed away from that shipyard.
