Guys..you need the expert eyes of an old salt(sailor) like me on that pic of the Varyag.
Know why it's riding so high? It's not a lack of engines. It's empty. No fuel, no supplies, no amunition. No crew with their assoisated equipment. That stuff is heavy. All 5 of the ships I was on rode high when empty.
As for aircraft. The USN shore bases carrier aircraft when the ship is in it's homeport or shipyard.
That big elevator going up to the flight deck or island is a sign to me that some heavy equipment...i.e. electronics is being installed. The scaffolding around the island means it's being painted or radars etc are being installed.
Too bad we can't install a spy at the shipyard to give us first hand reports and pics
