If it was in drydock some months ago...can that mean that they have installed engines?!

*dun dun dun*
It is possible...I would not be surprised. One day, I beliecve the PLAN will surprise everyone when a carrier sails, under her own power, away from a Chinese shipyard...and the double surprise will be that within a short time some aircraft are flown aboard her to begin testing.

That's what I thought. What are your thoughts on the PLAN converting some J11s to an "SU-33-like" naval configuration?

J-11C

Should the development of the J-11B prove a success, it would be a good candidate (J-11C?) for the PLA Navy’s first carrier-borne fighter. In contrast to the Chengdu J-10, which is also identified as a candidate fighter for a future PLA Navy carrier, the J-11/Su-27’s capability to take off and land on aircraft carrier has been proven by the Sukhoi Su-33, the Russian navy version of the Su-27. A J-11 with higher thrust WS-10A engines might be able to handle the Russian-style ski-jump taking-off. And as it built the Russian Navy’s Su-33s, KnAAPO would be a ready source for potential carrier-related modifications for the J-11.
- this could be the futur AIR SUPERIORITY FIGHTER AIRCRAFT on carriers

PLANAF UI unit N/A Ease Sea Fleet is operating Su-30MK2, a improved variant for PLANAF, with anti-ship strike capability and improved EW/ECM suite
- thats sounds like future carrier group

I believe you are right. I believe not only is the PLAN already considering it...but it sounds like they may well could already be developing, and perhpas producing them in small numbers for testing on the Varyag.

thats also my opinion, additional I believe that the two-engine, two-seat L-15 advanced lead-in trainer (LIFT)

will have the potential to form a carrier trainee aircraft. May be, the first planes at a carrier we will see are those trainer-aircrafts.

I am not sure about the J 10; this fighter should also have two engines for carrier-ops.
A double engined J 10 could be a nice toy, but I didn't now more about a 2-engine J-10 as some doubtful rumours.

Re: Latest Varyag Pics

Thankss for that overhead pic Jeff. The yellow paint on the island(tower) is a coating of a primer. I remember in the USN the yellow primer was used only on bare metal then covered with "red lead" primer before the final painitng was done. This is not something that is done to a ship that is not going to sea. This is assuming that the PLAN is using some sort of similar type paint as the USN. The USN also has a blue primer type paint.

With the posting of this pic I am now more sure than ever that the PLAN will send the Varyag to sea. The only question is when.

The dramatic irony will be that in sailing out, she accidentally broadsides the Yuan, sinking them both and blocking the harbour, thusly preventing further use of the Shipyards. :p

Dunno you'd have to ask wwu2142 at China Defense forums, as he was the person who originally posted this picture. I'm just sharing a pic not shown on this forum b4.
