As for the red superstructure, that could be a lot of things, like resin body fillers (plug up holes), fire seal coating (ceramic/steel filled putty), rust inhabitor coating, or polyurethane/enamel base coat.

"The navigating bridge remained habitable and the ship's course was altered to take advantage of the wind to clear smoke and heat to port, away from the island. Primary fly control was made untenable by heat and smoke. Fire-resistant paint and fiber glass insulation on the inside of the island plating stood up excellently to intense heat. Although paint on the inside of dead-lights in some cases carbonized and flaked, it did not ignite, thereby preventing fire from spreading through the interior of the island."

Well all the newest PLAN warships have been in similar "color" shape where the superstructure is dark red...

But i'm personally getting more and more covinced that Varyag will be commissioned and i dare to say that it going to end up being fully operational...tough spending first decade (or little less) as a training purpose. Many here suggest that Varyag is going to be used some sort of training ship (or floating barge) but not as a operational carrier. I don't agree whit that. PLAN and whole china is rising in fast rate and best thing to do is get operational aircraft carrier floating as soon as possiple. Varyag is the ideal solution, producing indegenious carrier starting from scrats will not be operational before 2015 even in the most positive speculation. Wheter the Varyag would be really operational, meaning fully fuctional airwing and so on is irrelevant, even Russians don't have full airwing in Kuznetsov and they being operating it since 1991...Aircarft carriers whitout need for global police work are really just icons of superpower status, just like Nuclear subs and Nukes in general. It's clearly evident that Varyag along isen't sufficient enough and need for indegenious desings are existing. But when those ships are ready, Varyag have already prooved it's value as chinese first carrier and carriercapaple airwing is ready for new decks...

yeah, it's clear that PLAN is trying to make it into an Aircraft carrier. Who knows, maybe the Kiev will get pulled in there after Varyag leaves.

so you're gonna bet on D6's claim?

I personally don't see the Varyag being brought back to front line operational status anytime soon.

Agreed. China has too few advanced escorts to protect the Varyag. And then there is the question of which aircraft is going to be on the Varyag. Is it going to be the navalied version of the J-10 or the Su-33? What are going to be the Varyag's own electronic warfare equipment? Things like that are still unknown and it will take quite some time for these issues to be resolved.

how many escorts do you think China needs? Let's see, we will get the Udaloy cruiser from Ukraine most likely. Add 052Cs, 052Bs, 2 956EM, 2 054, 2 053H3 and some auxilary ships. That should be enough. Besides, you can never have enough advanced escorts against USN.

Re: Latest Varyag Pics

If we see the PLAN operate carrier capable aircraft, I think there's a good possibility that the a/c might be used for training or even fitted for service. However as of this writing I'm not aware of any MiG-29K or Su-33 purchase, and I don't think the J-8 or J-10 is carrier capable.
