Re: Aircraft Carriers II

To get a better feel for just how big the 22DDH, Izumo, DDH-183, really is, I thought I would compare it directly to the Wasp Class LHD of the US Navy. So, here is a port side view of the USS Bataan, LHD-5, the fifth US Navy Wasp Class, and from the same perspective on the port side, the view of the newly launched JMSDF Izumo, DDH-183.

The Wasp is 30 feet longer, it is about 10 feet taller, but it's beam is actually 3-4 feet less, although it's flight deck is a good 15-20 feet wider.

As you can see, the new Japanese vessel is a very large ship. Even at 30,000 tons full load, which is 3,000 tons larger than they admit to, I believe if fully outfitted with aircraft and fuel, it will be closer to 35,000 tons.

Ski ramp with catapult?

that would be kinda of counterproductive isn't it? I'm no naval architect but I thought the reason you use ski jump is because you don't have catapult and vice versa. Seemed like overkill to me not to mention an extremely difficult mechanical challenge to overcome!

An aircraft leaves a ski ramp at a lower speed than it leaves a straight cat. Building an EM cat into a ski ramp makes the ramp smaller and the cat shorter thus saving a lot of deck real estate. You might be able to make a smaller carrier just as efficient as a big one and have more carriers than an other navy with the same total capability and the same costs but with more flexibility.

An eyewitness at Dalian Shipyard has noted that the first module for the aircraft carrier is under construction. It is said to be part of the new carrier which will be based on the Liaoning; here is a drawing from the eyewitness.

What is the source of this information? Are there photos of this?

there isn't. We don't get pictures of everything because Dalian shipyard is not that easy to take up close photos and also some people might be worried that they get put in jail. But if this stuff is for real, we will definitely see photos sooner rather than later.

Yup! With recently a Chengdu employee get fired and all the high management of the project get demerit points and warning for leaking out photo of J-20.

No one is going to risk leaking out close photo of construction of new CV in the shipyard. We just have to be patient and wait for aerial view once the big pictures comes together...
