3) Those are called "Cow(bridle) catchers". Certain aircraft used bridles to launch. Such as an A-4. In the photo below you can clearly see the bridle attached to the shuttle. The USN stopped catching bridles long before I served.

how come the skyhawk has no "hinges" (?) so the forward landing gear could lock into the rail.

Attaching a launch bar to that long skinny nose gear might overstress it, the bridal attaches on both sides near the wing roots, probably the heaviest structure on the whole airframe! brat Do the Brazilians use launch bars or bridles??? OT
Carrier aircraft such as the J-15 have a much heavier superstructure to absorb those loads???? brat

Thanks for the photograph of the bridle on the A-4. When visiting HNethMS Karel Doorman half a century ago I was told that some time earlier the sea had taken off the bridle catcher so that at every launch a bridle with the value of 60 guilders, then about $25, was thrown into the sea.
Those bridles will be attached to the aircraft and the cat shuttle by manual labor. To what extent is manual labor still necessary when using the current method for attaching the nose gear to the shuttle? Is possible to make the connection between shuttle and aircraft without manual intervention and so save time and labor?

Yes, the aircraft is simply directed to the catapult. Sometime a foot is needed to assure the launch bar is secure in the shuttle.

No foot used here but I'm sure you get the point.

When there is an extension in front of the catapult, the bridle will be reused. If not, it is thrown into the sea. USN and Royal Navy catched the bridles (at least Ark Royal and Eagle), French and other threw it over board.

The USN stopped catching bridle wires some time ago. Now a days there are zero aircraft that use a bridle. The shuttle on a catapult is equipped to handle a bridle.

My memory is fuzzy on this. At least one of the ships I served on..I think the Hancock may have caught the bridles.

I'm glad the "Blue Ghost," the Lexington, CVA-16, was made a .


Think of all she saw between 1943 and 1991. Very, very involved in World War II:

- Kwajalein Raid (Where she was damaged by a Torpedo from an attacking Japanese aircraft)
- Battle of the Philippine Sea (Marianas Turkey Shoot)
- Battle of Leyte Gulf
- Attacks on Formosa
- Attacks on the Japanese Home Islands

Rebuilt from 1953-1955 to become a modern, angled deck carrier with steam cats, a side elevator, a new island, landing system, jet blast deflectors, larger hanger, strengthened structures, etc. going through both Essex Class upgrades SCB-27C and SCB-125 at the same time.

Being designated as the US Navy's training carrier late in her career and training so many US Naval aviators and crew members.

Here she is putting to sea in 1987 as a training carrier:


As built she displaced 36,300 tons. After all of her modifications, she displaced 48,300 tons. And you know what? With her angled deck, large hanger spaces, steam catapults, arrested landing, jet blast deflectors, landing system, air conditioning, etc., if she were built brand new today just like she sits, she would represent one of the most capable aircraft carriers in the world still (outside of America's super, nuclear carriers) .

22DDH nearing launch in Japan

OK, getting back to modern aircraft carriers and their news, once again, here are the five most recent construction images of the 1st in class JMSDF, 22DDH aircraft Carrier, DDH-183, that I could find.

The first is from March 2013 and shows the hull complete and the flight deck nearing completion. The next two, show the island progressing, and the last two show the island almost complete. These are from May 2013 to the start of June 2013.

It is coming along very nicely and due to launch in 2014 to my understanding.


This is going to be a very capable vessel, displacing almost 30,000 tons. Here are her specs:

Displacement: 27,000 tons (full load)
Length: 815 ft. (248 m)
Width: 125 ft. (38 m)
Beam: 110 ft. (33 m)
Propulsion: 4 GE LM2500 COGAG, 2 shafts
Speed: 30+ knots
Crew: 970 (Includes Air Wing)

- 16 or more ASW/SAR helicopters

- 2 x 21 Cell RAM
- 2 x 20mm Phalanx CIWS
Elevators: 2
