Re: The PICs every PLAN enthusiast is waiting for

personally i wouldnt like to see thus type of carrier

i would like to see a conventional type carrier without the ski jump and most importantly without the su33 instead with Chinese naval version of J10

secondly i would also like to see China first make more Type071 LPD and Type081 LHP with medium and heavy lift chinese origin helicopters on board

in addition to this the first few carriers can be 65,000+ tons before they make 100,000+tons supercarriers

if china is going to have a coming out party might as well have it all chinese no russian influence in it and i think thats the reason why we havnt seen chinese carrier cus they are working on it

I don't think the CCP has any problem with the religious part of it at all, especially since the first TV series was made in the early 80's when things were not as open as now. Also, an animated movie based on the first part of the novel (about the Monkey King messing with the whole Heaven's court and defeating all 100,000 troops and ALL the great generals single-handedly) was made in 60's in the height of all the crazy anti-anything-ancient-China. So yeah, I don't the CCP has any problem with it at all.

Good point. Overlooked that.

Anyway, the movie "Journey to the West" apparently has Donnie Yen as the Monkey King. Aaron Kwok, Chow Yun Fatt and Cecilia Cheung is in there somewhere. And Kelly Chen is cast as Goddess of Mercy. Should sell well given the popularity of the story.

Then you don't see the logic of PLA build-up: they always opt to solve the "have such capability" problem then go solve the "have good capability" problem.

According to many, the J-10 carrier-borne version was studied as part of the competition that result in J-15, but in the end the J-10 option was dropped because it was deemed too risky - the modifications required would be extensive and with no previous experience in design carrier borne fighters, schedule and budget overshot is almost assured...y'know, unlike India, China isn't that tolerant to delays.

Next for the larger ships like the LPD and even the rumored LHD, actually you can include the DDG in this mix, the problem would be the procurement of suitable engines, or to be exact, the production of it. If Kanwa is to believed, the recent spike of DDGs, 2nd LPD and the fast pace on the Varyag work has to do with the establishment of licensed-DM80 production line goes online in China.

Finally back on the topic of name, one of the requirements in PLAN choice of name is to be dignifying, so that'd leave those from the folk lore and whoever that's slightly disputed out.

Well, the one we KNOW they are working on, and now making rapid progress on what appears to be final outfitting is the Varyag. A russian initial design that will carry, in all likelihood Russian designed fighters.

But, having refit the vessel from the state it was in, and if they can successfully get an initial wing of SU-33s flying off of its deck, will be a significant accomplishment. They will immediately catapult China in to one of the top aircraft carrier clubs with one of the most capable vessels.

The US is undisputed leader...then probably France with its own nuclear carrier. I'd have to put Russia after that and then, if they have the Varyag, China.

Once the UK gets two of the QE class out, they will be in second spot...but the Indians, once they get 2-3 good sized, much more modern carriers will also be right in the mix.

My guess is we will see that Varyag followed by two indegenous Chinese designs later in the decade. With three large, modern carriers, China will at that point surpass Russia and be right in there with the UK and India. France will fall back unless they can get at leat a second one out there.

I think the names would be just provincial level locations such as direct-controlled municipalities, Provinces and Autonomous regions. Considering frigates are named after minor cities, and destroyer named after major ones (in most cases provincial capitals). The logical choice would start with Beijing or Shanghai.

There're only 4 direct-controlled municipalities in China and that's allotted for cruisers - unless they changed the law that governed the naming rules that's out.
And like I've said before, that naming law made no provision about anything above the cruiser (PLAN did have a light cruiser once, though only for a short time before it was sunk by KMT bombers), of course even in its 1980s revision nobody in their wildest dream thought China would become a nation that can own a carrier...

what is the source of this? besides i dont think PLAN would like a single engine fighter on carriers.

type 071 isnt powered by DN80 and varyag is projected to use steam engines

Like everyone this story is abound in the Chinese BBS sites but y'know it should be taken with a grain of salt...yet, it makes sense if you got the chance to examine the J-10 closely, I mean physically...fortunately they got the first prototype and a 2 seater model on display in museum outside Beijing; by the look of it, there's little room to make it accommodate the beef-up structure and landing gear needed for carrier ops, and even if they do, there's a problem of keep it all inside a reasonable weight margin so not to sacrifice too much in terms of performance; and then there's the problem with takeoff power - not that feasible if you ask me, unless Chinese have catapults.

I know the 998 LPD uses French diesel engines but they can't get more from there nor have it license-built in China, so they turn to Ukraine for alternative.

SEMT pielstick was acquired by MAN, and its now part of MAN (which is a german company). And where have you read that china cant get or license-built naval engines from europe?

What about varyag?
