The module's width could have been expanded upon since March 3, 2013 (assuming that it is the same module as in GE)

Now looking at Google Earth, we can see that the ratios of the distance between the portside to the far edge of the trench (about 10 meters) and the module's width whole is 1:5.

But looking at the photos that surfaced (which are presumably more current), that ratio becomes 1:6.

Presumably, the starboard side of the module has been extended since. This also solves our annoying elevator problem, since it would presumably be extended ten meters (or maybe not, it's still awfully narrow).

If I have time, I'll do some MS Paint magic.

If you look at the last picture in post 18 you can see that the back end of the piece is noticeably larger than the front. So this piece does not necessarily represent the maximum beam of the ship? If the opening on the left hand side is indeed an elevator the actual opening appears to extend partially into the next deck down. If the fence is as someone said, 1.1 m, then the deck height should be >6 m.

Granted, it's rather messy, but the actual ratios look like 1 : 5.3 in March 2013 and 1 : 6.3 in August 2013 (or so I presume that's the date).

Yes, I know the August 2013 photo was taken at an angle, but even so, there's still an appreciable difference.

Sorry to burst the bubble folks. The pieces in question are eventually going to be plopped neatly into the rectangular slots in the big red piece closer to the water and make some sort of cargo ship.

This "Hangar" is arround two decks in high, this means ~ 4 to 5 m at all. Seems not enough for J-15 (nearly 6 m) or SA 321Ja Super Frelon / Z-8 (6,76 m). It only coud be used for vehicles ....

'PanAsian.............i posed your doubts, on another forum, but was shot down, most people think that what we are indeed looking at is a middle section of a carrier, and detailed comparisons have been made against other carriers.........you could be right, but that section we are looking out seems to wide to fit in any of the rectangular slots in that cargo vessel you mentioned.

Maybe section under construction could be for a helicopter carrier.........who knows?

Anyway.......time will answer the question!

It seems to be a little too large to fit into the rectangular slot, but hard to tell from that angle.

And from Google Earth, the module was there in March 2013, but the big red piece wasn't there. There were two other hulls in that area, but their keels were a lot more complete.

Whoa! I've been gone for a week and now there's a LHD-type object and possibly a carrier under construction.

The real question here is: is

If not, then it is reasonable to conclude that a LHD might be under construction at Jiangnan, which is the suspected shipyard of the LHD, and the carrier-type object might represent an ongoing project at Dalian, the suspected shipyard of the 001A or 002. However, if they are the same, then they might simply represent a scaled down conceptual mockup of an aircraft carrier since the EMALS trough does not conform with any LHD we have seen.

However, there is substantial talk on the internet that the carrier-type module shown at Dalian is actually part of a conceptual mockup, not the actual carrier, and competition between the companies has yet to start.

is it just me or the module laying on the shipyard appears to have a much smaller 'hanger' opening than the one of the module by itself?
