PLAN Carrier Construction

Today's China Military Review pronouncement about the construction at Changxing Island could be the first "semi-official," type indication that the vessel and structures we see there at Changxing Island are in fact a PLAN LHA.

If so, then the shadows were not playing games on us. Here is what I have come up with to explain what we are seeing.

PLAN Type 75 LHA Under Construction at Changxing Island

PLAN Type 75 Construction at Changxing Island Explanation

From this, it is clear to me that the PLAN is constructing its first large LHA Vessel there at Changxing Island, probably in the 35-40,000 ton range. From the photo, it may well be that what we are seeing there in the lower right, could in fact be the second such vessel under construction.

Jeff, are you saying there are two PLAN LHAs under construction visible in the picture?

Or are you saying if the modules are those of an LHA, that it would be the second PLAN LHA under construction and there is another one being constructed somewhere else?

I am still not convinced that the picture shows anything military but just wanted to understand what you are saying. An LHA at this point would at least make more sense than a CV.

I think from day one it has been unquestionable that this module is that of a flat top warship, it's got a hanger it's got a elevator thats more than enough evidence

However it is entirely possible it's a modue mock up only to show that this shipyard can build a flat top

In the picture I show marked up, you see the one vessel, fairly far along in construction, with a clear similar section towards the bow as what is observed in the lower left of the picture.

My own personal belief is that the vessel under construction is advanced well towards the bow and that both of those other modules in the lower left which are very similar to the cross section at the bow of the vessel under construction, are in fact for a second such vessel. But that's just my opinion.

It is interesting to note that the two sections in the lower left show one that has a higher cross section for the opening, which could be for the hanger, and that the one further forward has a lower cross sesction, which could be for vehcile storgae or some such.

Time will tell.

Thinking about the relation betwen the three photos (GE photo, and these two photos).

- The GE photo shows a ship bow in the inicial stages of construction.
- The big photo shows what seems to be a military ship in a fairly advanced stage of construction, including an island. However there is no sign of the bow present in the GE photo.
- The small photo presents a section of the ship. However this photo must have been earlier than the big photo, because where is the rest of the modules and the island? also there is no sign of the bow, which is strange, because in the GE photo thats the only module there.

what do you think? where is the bow in these pictures? exactly how old are these two pictures?

An eyewitness at Dalian Shipyard has noted that the first module for the aircraft carrier is under construction. It is said to be part of the new carrier which will be based on the Liaoning; here is a drawing from the eyewitness.

Ski ramp with catapult?

that would be kinda of counterproductive isn't it? I'm no naval architect but I thought the reason you use ski jump is because you don't have catapult and vice versa. Seemed like overkill to me not to mention an extremely difficult mechanical challenge to overcome!
