PLAN ASW Capability

Well, since U.S is the number one aggressor and warmonger on Earth, it is in China's best interest to
place those sensors anywhere it deems necessary in order to maintain some vigilance against the US.
Remember, the U.S shot down a Syrian plane inside Syria 'self-defence'... what sheer hypocrisy. The US uses 'international rule of law' according to its wishes, China needn't listen to these Western hypocrites.China should use every means available to her to defend herself, and keep building her arsenal.
So you are ok with China being hypocritical here too, then? Because I have no idea what Palau and the Federated States of Micronesia ever did to offend China.

It doesn't make any sense to put an underwater monitoring system out in the second island chain. Any information obtained is not actionable since ASW aircraft certainly aren't going to be patrolling out that far, not to mention that sensors located out in the open like this will simply get destroyed during wartime. Not only that, these sensors definitely impinge on the EEZs of several Pacific Island nations. Imagine the Chinese reaction if the US put some sensors right off of Hainan's EEZ.

I don't know what is your problem The US has been snooping around the Hainan island for sometime using SURTASS like Impeccable class ships
What good for the goose is good for the gander So eat your heart out if now the table is turned

The purpose of sensor is to track the coming and going of US submarine it no different than the old SOSSUS that the US planted in GUIK gap and hunt any Soviet submarine that cross the gap. It was superseded since the Soviet sub are getting quieter and replaced it with SURTASS and IUSS. Plan is under way to update it

I don't think the Micronesian nation mind because they have good relation with China.. China does not have problem with those states . But hey security is paramount and China will do everything to secure its border from any threat

I understand that huge parts of the Pacific Ocean are claimed by US on the basis of the ownership of islands that aren't islands under the UNCLOS treaty. But of course US didn't ratify the treaty.:)

It's much more likely that those buoys are merely for scientific reasons such as monitoring the ocean and weather conditions. After all isn't the breeding area for most of the typhoons in that hemisphere. Plus, if they only download the data they collect once a year, what tactical value could they serve?

Bathymeter also measure temperature in water layer and as such it can tell the submariner where to hide because echo is reflected by the water temp interface
It is about technology now that they converted to real time monitoring from manual collection of physical data .

That is why they converted to satellite communication because delay cause by actually collecting data from hundred of monitoring station.

Any single advance is meaningless but if you add up all the advances it all point up to advancing submarine monitoring as I already explain

With no disrespect, just because you said it does not make it true. What are the chances the U.S. has subs loitering there waiting for someone to pass by. Plenty of other places, including choke points to hangout. A buoy floating one the surface in such a highly trafficked part of the world is not likely be able to detect the quietest and most competenty operated subs in the world out from all the biologic and surface maritime traffic background noise.

USN could also argue that its security and that of its allies is "paramount" and that's why it spies on China.

In any case, if China did not obtain permission from Micronesia and Palau before putting those sensors there, then it would represent obvious hypocrisy on China's part. In which case China would have no international standing at all if it protests against USN spy ships in its EEZs, and I would expect you and the others here to never complain again about US spying in China's EEZ, otherwise you would be sharing in the same hypocrisy.

And which parts based on which islands are those, exactly?

Officially it is not a military sensor and as long as those littoral states acknowledge it as such and can live with it I don't see any problem,

I don't think those littoral states will complain because it is not directed against them and Chinese investment in those island more than make up for the inconvenience

Morality aside it become problem when those littoral states object the socalled intrusion

Maybe not officially, but it's a military sensor whether it has civilian or military oversight. Nobody is confused about what this thing is. It's not about whether those PI states complain, it's about staying consistent as much as possible. China would be wise to get those states on board, or it will have no standing when it tells the USN to GTFO the SCS.

Don't exaggerate. US has never been consistent. But I'm sure China has diplomats working on it.
