PLAN Anti-Piracy Deployments

China had played active role in these piracy missions for a while now and also we are seeing Chinese ships visiting more and more ports for "replenishment" which I think is really to build bridges

The Chinese naval task force also makes routine stops at Karachi port, and there is plenty of maintaince, repair, overhaul and upgrade facilitys provided there which is tailored for Chinese surface vessels since Pakistan has extensive Chinese ship building capabilty

If Pakistan buys Chinese SSK this will also give us facility's for submarines, maybe not nuclear submarines but sub-surface Chinese subs anyway we already have extensive Agosta 90B facility's

So in future I hope China can send its more warships to Pakistan and we can do more joint missions, maybe even one day Chinese carrier task force can visit Pakistan which would be a very good mission for both nations

Karachi is very strategically located and I think it's no surprise that China has made it it's most frequent over seas stop which can serve advanced Chinese warships

Allowing Pakistan to first buy then build under ToT warships and other systems has benefits for both nations, our communication becomes much better and more advanced

They're still using the old QBZ95 not the newer QBZ95-1, and without the optical attachment.

I am not sure how much of an improvement the '95-1 will be over the '95 in this situation unless the pirates start fielding modern ballistic vests.

The potential increase in effective range by using the old machine gun round as standard with the '95-1 is also of questionable value given the turbulent nature of operating at sea. Even on dry land, it would take some luck for a decent marksman to score a hit against a man-sized target at 400m+ in an actual combat setting. Pushing that out to 600-800m at sea, when both the host ship the PLA marines are standing on and the speedboats their targets are sitting in are all bobbing up and down with the waves, well, I question whether it is really all that useful to be able to shoot that far out when you are not likely to hit anything.

As for optics, well they would definitely help with longer range targeting, but they bring problems of their own, especially when operating at sea. Optics have a bad habit of misting up when you transit rapidly between hot and cold environments, the moisture thick air of the sea will only make this worse. The last thing anyone wants is for their fancy optics to mist up when they deploy out of their nice and warm helo into the cold night air, or when they breach a room and rush from outside into the warm interior of a ship.

- USS Winston S. Churchill (DDG 81 - an AEGIS DDG) ... participated in a counter-piracy exercise with Chinese frigate Yi Tang (FFG - 458, a Type 054A guided missile frigate) of the People's Liberation Army (Navy) PLA(N) near the Horn of Africa
Thanks for posting this Popeye.

This is a really good thing and I am glad sailors had tyhe opportunity to exercise/train together against a common foe and strengthen bilateral ties.

Would have been interesting to hear the sailors from both vessels share their thoughts on the qualiry of the sailors and equipment from the respective navies.

Also, pics of these two vessels operating together would also be really nice...from a helo off either vessel.

They seem familiar now that you show them here.

I was wondering if there was a good pic of the two vessels sailing along near one another as a part of the exercise or photo op?

That would make a really nice pic.

I dont think such a photo exists Jeff i would like to have seen one too

i think it was just a cross border training where they took a speed boat from DDG 81 and then boarded the Type 054A

however there must have been quite close radio communication between the 2 navies and they must have been in contact with each for the duration of the training

this is indeed a good move by both navys hope to see more of them, maybe PLAN sailors will one day board US aircraft carrier? or Type 052D sailing along with Arleigh Burke

It has happened on a small scale.
