Actually I believe the pirates get what is coming to them... it is about time we make a stand against these people... the US did it, the French did it... the Indians did it, now the Russian. It is high time NATO and UN took a harsher stand against the pirates. Once you locate them, you hit them hard!

Ive also heard stories, that the somalis are being paid wages to be pirates. Its the King pin of the criminal elements that are getting the big pay off.

Meanwhile Im sure the Chinese navy are very happy for the opportunity of being up there indefinitely.

Hey Ive just had a very bad thought, what say the chinese a running some kind of rogue operation up there, that has 100% deniability, but they are actually encouraging the piracy?:D:D After all theres been the American/Iran Contra affair, Pakistani links with the Taliban and so on.

I have been habouring that thought for a long time now:D, but seriously I doubt it to be true... afterall what can the Chinese gain from that type of activities - a few million dollars? even if it is a few billions dollars, it was of very little when it came down to entire nation. Plus you can't really use these pirates to create anything more than a nuisence, unlike the Taliban.

If it was some corrupted officers that are behind this affair and that most of the money came into his pocket... then it is understandable.:D

From what I can see... and the lack of strong actions against these pirates from any of the nation, I think the main thing now is that piracy was just a reason for different nations to have military presence in that area... and that area had somehow become a showcase for militaries and aspiring nations to show off their muscles. Kind of sad, if you think about it.

THats exactly what I mean, but in this case the Chinese get the most benefit, their ships and sailors experiencing long periods of Blue water operations with other navies, in waters they would not normally be in.

A couple million dollars backhanderto the Somalis to cause trouble is cheap:D:D

and for the first time, a common enemy anyone can come to hate. there won't be controversies since these pirates are being branded as pretty much terrorists on water

Hey, that was already nicely done as part of the show. The Chinese did pay the Somali pirates one or more ransoms previously. :D

But really, I don't think there's any conpiracy. Accidental opportunity - Yes.

Re: Somali pirates and Chinese navy

The Somali pirate problem would be a long standing one unless the Somali sort out their own sloppy mess - see, other than sitting near the major commercial sea lane, it's pretty a land of nothing with lots of hungry mouths to feed, infinite tribal feuds, and stabilizing such "nation" (for it has no truly working government all this time), it'd be a no-gain investment for any nation to undertake, and sending naval taskforce to do police action would be the cheapest solution, besides the "do-nothing" alternative.

For China, it's the god-sent golden opportunity to conduct regular long range mission, which itself presented a never-before chances to truly train its men and test its equipment in real-world, real-combat scenarios, and the "Chinese aggression" excuse that the West so used to blaming China can't be applied here - as you can see, throughout the 6 taskforces thus far the PLA Navy rotates elements from all its 3 fleets, conducting supply drills on the way (that'd be useful when comes to operating their own carrier battle group in the future), even being the LPD/LCAC along for sea trials...

Apologize in advance but I couldn't find the latest info. Which ships are now currently on rotation? I believe Guangzhou is on rotation. Is the 071 joining or replacing?

The Type 071 LPD with the LCAC is with the latest - the 6th - taskforce, that's why it gets so much buzz lately.

ships from China's 5th flotilla to Burma DDG 168 and FFG 568 came to visit Burma. This is PLAN's first visit to Burma. I guess Burma is another possible export destination of 054A.
