The pirates of Malacca Straits are mostly Indonesians based in Rio archipelago and Sumatra island of Indonesia. Compare with the Somalia pirates they are liked like snatch thief.

Their normal operations are climbing un-notice onboard ships travelling slowly in the narrow channels, then over-power the ship crew and rob them of their personal assets like watch, jewerly, and the cash or whatever from the captain's safe.

They carried knives and light fire arms. Rockets and heavy machines guns are unheard of, and AK47 or M-16 are not common.

hijacking ships did happen but rarely. Intensified joint air and sea patrol from Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia has also resulted in less pirate activities.

Sound device is very powerful non-lethal weapon. I remember a TV documentary, could be Discovery Channel or National Geagraphy, the intense sound wave can cause disorientation and vomiting, the target would lost his balance and fall onto the ground.

The effcetive range depends on the power of the sound blaster. The powerful one may be even lethal at very close range.

Since it look a box or panel and you can't hear the high pitch sound, the pirates would not known what hit them, that can really scare them off. And you would not want to be on a small boat in high sea if you can't balance your feet, your mind disoriented, and your ears popping in pain.

The latest news in the US press is that the sonic device failed to deter the pirates attacking Alabama Maersk, so the security force opened fire with rifles.

The sound device(~150 dB) is actually non-lethal even if you stand next to it, you just lose your hearing. Of course, wearing an earmuff will render the sonic device ineffective, but you would experience temporary hearing loss. I worked a company that makes these for the Navy in San Diego. Apparently North Island NAS is using this to fend off people who trespass onto the base unknowingly.

the theory goes that if you are busy using your hand as an earmuff you can't do much harm, unless you have 3, or 4 arms lol.

I think all these neat high tech equipment would not have been extremely effective against the pirates, who might come up with crude, but kind of effective equipment to counter these things, also I am wondering the effectiveness of the sound device in open sea.

I think powerful jets of water might be more effective against the pirates. These things prevent the pirates from boarding the ship and might be strong enough to even knock the pirates off their boat.

And it would require far less complex equipments to function. They can even create automated system that doesn't require the crew to be expose and still prevent pirates from climbing on board.

It is not too difficult to blockade the several major harbours and restrict pirate mother ship operations, CTF-150 alone could do that. They probably like the pirates :rofl: The pirates are promoting all navies to corporate together, which is good for most nations and it will make navies more friendly to each other.

Politically, good chance for nations to show their international responsibility and promote pride at home as well.

For many navies in the world, for example PLAN, what an excellent opportunity it is for them to train their crew and develop a blue water navy, they can't miss that opportunity.

Clearly the 054 and 054A class ships are becoming the workhorse of the modern PLAN.

No surprise there as they are the second-most capable ships in PLAN's inventory. The only problem is that there are too few of them.

tphuang has pointed out several times that the pace of building of 054A is pretty quick already. But if they could have launched one or two more ships per year, that would make a big difference.
