this kind of operation would require a lot of international cooperation. if it does work in the end it would provide a classic case study of collborative approach to international problems. it would be pretty damn awesome from a diplomatic perspective, even beyond the spectrum of protecting ships at gulf of aden.

Restoration of effective government and economy in Somalia could be the root key to eradication of piracy. However, the failure of previous UN attempt and the Black Hawk Down incident seemed to discourage future UN intervention.

I have little doubt the brains behind the pirates have connections with various warlords since their operations are rather sophisticated, the ransom money might be split between the pirates and warlords.

UN should vote for a special resolution to declare the ocean around Somalia a kind of "protective zone" where a UN funded international coast guards fleets operate anti-piracy and anti-foreign fishing and anti-toxic dumping patrols.

Destroyer and frigates are too expensive to maintain as patrol ships. Offshore patrol boats and large cutters are more economy.

Unless there is true hearted will and co-operation among major nations, piracy will continue. And I really doubt we will see that happen, most nations put their ships there because there is political needs to assure their people that they care and want to protect their merchant ships. If there is oil or rich minerals found in Somalia, then we might see changes.

From what I can see, piracy will not end unless the root cause for all this was determine and solution to be implemented from the root cause... and the root cause is that the native Somalians are starving, their livihood is threaten... their government is ineffective and the warlords are tyrannts.

The only way to finally root out this problem... the UN had to take the following steps,

1) Military actions against the warlords and government. Wipe them out totally and install a government that is effective.

2) Restore trade option with the Somalia, this is a long process, it would first need alot of monetary help from the world... educate the people, teach them a trade such as agriculture, etc, so they can be self substain, then introduce manufacturing industries into the country, that would provide job opportunity for the people.

3) Set up international patrols and laws against illegal fishing and dumping of waste material into the surrounding sea, so the fishermen can again pick up their nets and fish once more.

4) Larger fisheries companies that wanted to fish in Somalia water, to hire somalians and thus providing job, money and livlihood to the people there.

Only by successfully introducing these steps, could we finally see piracy in that area totally wiped out.

Im under the impression that it was the motherships taking the little boats futher out to sea that was causing the problem. Wouldnt they be to big to be pulled up onto any old beach?

because if the pirates are gone, then there will be no reason for the navies to be there. i think this has been discussed earlier

Just read that the Alabama Maersk was attacked by Somali pirates again and private security guards repelled the attack with guns and a 'high-decibel noise device'.



Does anyone know what kind of device this might be? Is it lethal or non-lethal?

Is this technology also available to or used by Chinese ships or forces?

Could just be a bullhorn for all we know but just curious.

THats the obvious way to go, better still if you had heavier firepower, I notice some people are opposed to having security detail on board, becaused they arent trained seamen. But surely there must be a few ex navy types that could be avaliable....... maybe Popeye would fancy an ocean cruise:

ff I didnt want to start another thread but the Straits of Malacca is supposedly another pirate hotspot, yet we dont hear that much about it, and how do they cope?

It is a non-lethal weapon designed for crowd control and stuff. It looks like a flat panel. The size varies depending on the power. It can be mounted on a jeep and aimed at a crowd. It's intense enough to get people out of way immediately. The cool part is that this thing is so focused like a laser. Although we are talking about sound, it only works when you aim it directly at a target. All you have to do is to move a couple steps away, you can't even heard a thing... I guess this is good because you don't want to hurt many innocent bystanders...

I'm sure the Chinese should have something similar especially since all the crazy demonstrations they get each years.
