Re: Somali pirates and Chinese navy

I heard the same from the BBC (it was mentioned briefly in the recent US cargo ship hijacking) but I don't have any details really other than it was hijacked recently.

it'd be cool if the PLAN was actually there to do something about it

Does anyone know if any other navy beside the PLAN is running convoys on a regular basis? At this point, it would seem to be the most sensible solution in the face of an increased frequency of pirate attacks as retribution.

Did those ships returned to China already? Or did the family members go to Somalia too?

SANYA, April 28 (Xinhua) -- Two Chinese warships returned Tuesday to a naval base at Sanya in the southernmost province of Hainan island after a four-month escort mission in the pirate-infested Gulf of Aden.

The two destroyers with the People's Liberation Army Navy, DDG-169 Wuhan and DDG-171 Haikou with a supply ship, took part in the country's first battle-ready overseas deployment beyond its territorial waters.

They departed from Sanya on Dec. 26.

The supply ship, Weishanhu, stayed with another two relieving warships on duty off the Somali coast to protect Chinese merchant vessels as well as other ships on request.

According to the task force's commander, the Wuhan and Haikou escorted 179 Chinese vessels, including 73 ships from Hong Kong and nine from Taiwan. Chinese warships also protected 33 foreign ships and rescued three chased by pirates.

Are you talking about the first photo? I have no idea unless it is some sort of exhaust for auxillary equipment..

That's the helicopter arresting pad. The PLAN's variant can probably trace its lineage to the French "Harpoon", which they got a first look at in the 1980s.
