PLAN Anti-Piracy Deployments

The BBC is reporting that CCTV ran the story. If that is true, then that is a big boost to the credibility of this claim, as CCTV should have the right contacts to know for sure if this is true or not.

The BBC also said "Several Indian newspapers reported the allegations, and cited Indian naval sources as admitting their submarine had tracked the Chinese warships. "Every nation does it," one was quoted as saying.". I wish they would specify what Indian newspapers they'r refering.

According to the article below, it did happen but everyone is still unsure about the nationality of the sub.

India: Our sub didn’t stalk China ships

By Sridhar Kumaraswami

New Delhi

Feb. 4: Indian defence sources on Wednesday said no Indian submarine had "stalked" any Chinese Navy destroyer in the Gulf of Aden and dismissed reports in this regard published in a section of the Chinese media.

According to Chinese media reports, the two Chinese destroyers — which are on anti-piracy patrols in the Gulf of Aden — were "stalked" by an Indian Navy submarine in the region which they alleged, was trying to track the "electronic signals and sonar data" of the Chinese destroyers.

"There is no question of any Indian submarine being involved in any such incident," Indian naval sources said without revealing any details on operational deployment of Indian submarines. It is believed that submarines of most navies are present in international waters. Officially, the Indian Navy maintains that only one of its ships is on anti-piracy patrols in the Gulf of Aden. There was no word on whether Indian submarines are deployed in the Gulf of Aden.

According to Chinese media reports, the tense stand-off between the Chinese destroyers and the Indian naval submarine lasted half-an-hour and included a chase by the destroyers following which the "cornered" submarine was forced to surface and then sail away. But the worrying aspect are the reports that said the Chinese naval commanders had deployed their torpedo-carrying anti-submarine helicopters and had threatened to use them against the submarine if it did not surface.
According to reports, the Chinese Navy soon identified the submarine as a 70-metre-long vessel armed with 20 torpedoes which tried to "jam" the sonar systems of the Chinese destroyers.

The Indian Navy had begun anti-piracy patrols in the Gulf of Aden last year against Somali pirates in the region. The US Navy, too, had recently welcomed anti-piracy patrolling by the Chinese Navy. With the Indian Navy now stating that its submarine was not involved in any such incident, speculation has been triggered as to whether the submarine belonged to the Navy of a Western country.

Obviously, no nation wants to admit one of it's subs was forced by another nation's military to surface. Looks like India owned up to it and now is backing off, as they apparently got a bit more egg on their face than they expected.

At any rate, if you are paying to put subs at sea, you might as well get some use of the taxpayer dollars and have the subs get some practice at shadowing. The sub goofed up..............these things happen. If the Chinese would have torpedoed the sub, well, tough beans. Well done China.

Chinese submarines in the Mediterranean region? Really?

Yup

This latest incident is not the first time Indian Navy has spooked the Chinese. As earlier reported by TOI, Navy had photographed three new Chinese submarines in the Mediterranean region as well as a new destroyer off Yemen's Socotra Island in separate incidents in 2006.

The three subs they mentioned are three brand new Kilos being carried on top of large cargo ships being delivered to China, plus the one of the new Sovremanny 956EMs on its first ever trip being delivered from Russia to China.

Hardly in any form of operational capability.

Haha what noobs those reporters are.

This is indeed a murky case, but based on the amount of reporting it is getting, it seems that it actually happened, especially if CCTV said it did. These submarine incidents are always sketchy like this. However despite Indian denials it seems to me that this was the Indian Navy, if only because all the speculation points to them and the Chinese sailors involved would certainly know the difference between a Kilo and say an LA class submarine. Besides, the US probably already has most of the signatures of Chinese vessels that it needs, and doesn't need to go and muck up the international-cooperation atmosphere of this anti-piracy mission to get them. The Indian Navy on the other hand, especially given the state of their sub force, probably has not had the opportunity to do this sort of thing and thus would have jumped at the chance to try to do some information gathering.

Where exactly did this take place again? IIRC it happened in the Gulf of Aden, which would suggest again the Indian Navy and a Kilo, because to catch the PLAN's DDGs they would have to know the general area they were in and narrow down their possible location/s because they would have to rendevous with their convoys and such.

Thank you very much.

The article just seems to imply, at least to me, that 3 Chinese subs were operating in the Mediterranean Sea region. So I thought that was out of the ordinary, considering their general operating areas.

since when?
if there are 3 Chinese subs operating in the Mediterranean Sea region
the Pentagon would have already sounded the alarm by calling on China to justify the presence of 3 sub in the med sea region

I think it is better to wait for the official reaction of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China
before speculating
