I wouldn't want to be the guy manning that station when the 730 goes off.

actually i think that station looks a bit redundant. its like placing two machine guns in one trench...what the hell is the point? i rather believe they put it there so the journalist can get a good photo with 730 in it

According to mil.qianlong.com: to prevent possible attacks from pirates, the Chinese destroyers have four layers of defense.

1. 100mm main gun. This gun has an effective range of about 10km.
2. Small caliber auto cannon (Type 730). This cannon has an effective range up to 4km.
3. 12.7 heavy machine gun. Range 1 to 1.5km
4. The special force equipped with type 95 series light weapon.

In case the attack comes at night, the destroyers also equipped with night vision device. So, they're safe :).

overkill, anything that come close enough will be shredded by the 730s ;)

The report also said that the possibility of using missiles on board the destroyers is almost zero. I agree with that. Missiles are too expensive to fight pirates or even not practical to fight a tiny boat like that. I think that in most case pirates would escape any navy vessels unless they have gone insane. If there is an engagement, the engagement should be separated into two cases.
1. To engage the speedboat. This might be a suicide attack. If they close in, you can see clearly what are on board, so you can let them come closer. Let's say some 500 ~ 800 meters. Then intercept them with heavy machine gun.
2. To engage the mother ship. You won't know what they have on board. Maybe some portable missiles which are still dangerous to the destroyers. In such case, you need to intercept it at longer range with your main 100mm gun. Let's say 2 ~ 5km.

I agree missiles are impractical to use against small boats, but I do see the possibility of using missiles against the pirate mothership (only if they decide to actively engage the pirate). Because the destroyers could have detected the pirate ship well beyond the firing range of the main gun, in that case fire some YJ-83 would be the most effective way. But then again the PLAN said they're not planning to actively seek to engage pirates.

The PLAN Africa Task Force has arrived on station!

China's anti-piracy naval fleet sailed into waters off Somalia on Tuesday, starting a three-month mission to protect passing ships against pirates. The Ministry of Transport has also started accepting escort requests from Chinese vessels.

The Chinese convoy, alongside other international warships, will patrol the area near the Gulf of Aden, a busy shipping lane leading to and from the Suez Canal.

Chinese mainland registered or invested ships set to sail through the Gulf of Aden can now hand in applications for escort to the China Shipowners' Association, which will pass on the request to the Ministry of Transport. The ministry will provide information about the vessels seeking help to the Chinese fleet on a daily basis.

Vessels from China's Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan can also seek escorts from the warships, according to an announcement by the Ministry of Transport.

The Hong Kong Marine Department has passed seven applications from Hong Kong-flagged vessels to the mainland requesting protection off Somalia, Hong Kong media reported on Monday.

The arrival of the Chinese fleet was welcomed by Hong Kong ship owners, Hong Kong's Marine Director Roger Tupper was quoted as saying.

"[The protection of] Hong Kong-flagged vessels will be facilitated," Tupper said.

The Chinese flotilla will also protect ships carrying humanitarian relief supplies for international organizations, such as the World Food Program.

Foreign ships can also apply for escort; the Chinese side will make a decision, pending actual conditions, the Ministry of Transport said.

The convoy, consisting of two missile destroyers and a supply vessel, departed on December 26, 2008 from Sanya in south China's Hainan Province. It is the country's first naval deployment on a potential combat mission beyond its territorial waters in recent history.

Since PLAN's position is to not actively seek and engage pirates, the pirates will either end up attacking a merchant ship being escorted by PLAN or they attack a merchant ship that eventually sends out a distress call which PLAN responds to. Scenario 1 seems improbable as pirates won't be that crazy (or maybe they are?). In scenario 2, since PLAN is responding, I see it more of sending ahead a helo with special forces? So an actual engagement between destroyer and pirates is highly unlikely?

I kinda wish PLAN could and would deploy some of those new FACs, seems to better match up to what the pirates are sporting.

And previously you posted..

Not to mention once there, you'll need a home base or a mother ship. Though the FACs high speed would match up very well with the pirates' speedboats.

We both know it would have been a logistical nightmare to support say four FACs in those African waters. Like you posted..you need a "Mother ship" or a base to operate from.
And they would have to be transported there. No small task.

Let's all give the PLAN a chance to do their duty with the ships they have sent and then see what the results are.

Oh absolutely and I still stand by my statements. But that doesn't mean one can't wish. :D
