China does not need to fire A Cannon To Kill Mosquitos. China needs big boats to carry cannons far and away from home.

As a sailor I can tell you this is normal speed. They left 8 days ago. They should be on station in the Gulf of Aden within 48 hours...

You know what I want to see? PLAN ships being refuled by the US Navy or some joint manuevers. Yes I know the PLAN has their own AOR..I just want to see joint operations with the USN.

I remember you made a prediction when the task force left that their transit time would be about 10 days. Now I just heard from the news that the task force will be on station on the 6th, I bow to your accuracy ;) Seems like PLAN's transit speed is similar to the US Navy's

Thank you.. All navies tavel at about the same speed in a task force. Actually the USN could go a little faster where as their AOEs can travel at 25+ knots if need be. The USN also has logistic ships preposition overseas.

From all the news I've read about the pirate attack, the pirates seem to be no fear of anybody. The news described them as "heavily armed". But to me, AK-47 and RPG-7 are only the small arm. They are equipped with speedboat, but their speed boats aren't fast enough compared to helicopters. But every time, it seems that the international force just wants to scare them away. Why?

According to the news posted by Popeye, there has been 4 attacks since the new year, but it's only 4 days since the new year!

News just came that Russia is about to send its Kirov class nuclear battlecruiser Peter the Great to Somalia to fight the pirates.

I guess the USN aircraft carrier battlegroups are the next in the line, seriously, they must have something else other than fighting pirates in the mind.

Do PLAN destroyers and frigates usually have fixed machinegun stations onboard, be it .50 caliber or 14.5mm or 7.62mm? cuz I don't recall seeing those.

I remember how the USN added said HMG stations after the Cole incident. It would really suck for the PLAN if they were to find out that they don't have the right weapons for the job when the pirates get within RPG range or launch an outright suicide attack at those brand new destroyers.

They are carrying navy special forces on the ships, and they have brought with them weapons that they use that are not normally on the ships.

According to mil.qianlong.com: to prevent possible attacks from pirates, the Chinese destroyers have four layers of defense.

1. 100mm main gun. This gun has an effective range of about 10km.
2. Small caliber auto cannon (Type 730). This cannon has an effective range up to 4km.
3. 12.7 heavy machine gun. Range 1 to 1.5km
4. The special force equipped with type 95 series light weapon.

In case the attack comes at night, the destroyers also equipped with night vision device. So, they're safe :).
