KARACHI: Chinese Navy Hospital Ship 'Peace Ark' has arrived at Karachi Monday as part of an overseas voyage to provide medical services to local residents.
On arrival, the Chinese ship was escorted by PNS SAIF. The Ship prior reaching Karachi has visited Djibouti, Kenya, Tanzania, Bangladesh, Cuba, Costa Rica, Jamaica and other countries.
'Peace Ark' is a 300 bed hospital ship having a medical crew of 100 equipped with CT, DR colored Ultrasound, automatic biochemical analyzer, anesthesia, breathing machine and higher pressure sterilization disinfection machine. The hospital ship consists of several specialized medical departments including cardiovascular, medicine department, general surgery department, orthopedics department, neurosurgery department, dental department and blood transfusion department. Peace Ark has 20 intensive Care Units and 8 operation theatres having room for 40 major surgeries simultaneously.
Medical specialists from Pakistan Navy will also accompany the Peace Ark staff during free medical camps. Pakistan Navy has also arranged seminars and professional discussions on medical topics with specialist teams of Peace Ark for mutual learning and benefit.
Very nice and modern hospital/medical ship.
I am surprised that MRI facilities/equipment were not mentioned. I imagine it must have that capability as well.

Not directly related to Anti-piracy deployments but a pic showing exercise partaked by the PLAN ship from Jan-Sep of 2013.
Maybe it's a good idea to have a dedicated thread on PLAN missions/operation news and photos(?)

These anti piracy missions by the PLAN, and by many other nations, are providing a critical service to commercial shipping operations, ensuring their safety.
Sometimes we forget that it can be a dangerous operation. Most of the time I am sure it is relatively quiet and perhaps even boring, while still providing critical security to commercial shipping and training to naval forces. But sometimes, it can erupt into fire fights and lethal situations.
Here's is a video of that happening with a Dutch ship and its boarding parties. It's over two years old, so forgive me for this if you have already seen it, but I believe most have not and it punctuates the point.

This could happen to those PLAN sailors at any time as they perform these duties. Let's all remember all of them in our prayers as they do so.

UN security council has called for comprehensive unified approach to fight piracy and robbery off the coast of Gulf of Guinea
Could mean more participation for PLAN!!
Also I hope from now on Chinese navy gets over this "port visit" soft soft approach to friendly nations and actually starts doing joint excercises with other world navy's
By all means make port calls and do your visits but be sure they do joint naval missions with these respective navy's, if you go aboard make sure you learn something and not just sail around for the sake of sailing because that will benefit no one
