I never understood why the Russians made the entire island superstructure so close to the middle. They could easily designed the ship where the entire thing is 10-15 ft closer to the starboard. Not only will it give her more deck space but it will increase hanger/interior space as well. There are tons of pipes, vents etc that goes 'up' to the island from below.

The superstructure is from the kiew class, and I think the starboard side has actually been extended, if you compare with the original kiew class vessel:

I also think there is a short take-off position, it just happens to be along the same line as the long take-off ones and the lack of deflectors means it is not clearly marked out:

They did increase the space to the starboard of the island. Allows more trucks and deck equipment to be parked there.

thanks! totally forgot about that. Come to think of it I think there have been entire threads on why the decision was made to do that.

Actually, if you look at the starboard launch track, around the middle of the island, just before that track crosses into the landing area, there is a small marking across the launch track that could well be that single, shorter launch position.

I am by no means convinced diagonal radome joints is disgonostic of electronically scanned array, active or passive.

For example, the F-16 with AESA refit doesn't have the diagonal radame joint, nor did the Mig-31, the first fighter in the world with an PESA.

Hopefully we will see a air wing on the Liaoning early next year. But for that to happen the Liaoning needs to go out to sea more often. Why does that ship need such a long time off between sea trials ?
