The question is, whether one or both are EMALS or steam. And if they are EMALS and steam, whether 001 and 001A will be refitted with waist steam cats.

The new picture shown by @danielchin tells the whole story: with ski jump normal operation of more than a dozen aircraft on deck is nearly inpossible. With a waist cat the bow can serve as parking area.

At this point, I believe the rumours from last year which suggested that one catapult is steam, one is EM (keep in mind this was before we had photo evidence of the catapults being constructed there), and that they were intended to be tested in relation to each other for 002.

But regardless of that, I am almost completely confident that 001A will not have waist catapults. Whether 001 and 001A may eventually get refitted with catapults later on in their service is another matter.

I also expect that 001A is put into service without catapult. To retrofit the ship with EMALS, major changes deep in the hull would be made. Steam catapults were already retrofitted into existing aircraft carriers.

Lesser power, more acceleration track length to get more milage before overhaul perhaps?

In other words, less strain to the aircraft and catapult machinery. Also, a greater track length increases the aircraft's MTOW otherwise limited by the takeoff distance, or even allow a heavier aircraft to take off, something that would not be possible previously.

Outstanding pics of Chinese carriers...note the plural!

As we discussed early in the year, the number of J-15s appearing on the Liaoning has steadily increased. We see eight here and there may well have been more. I would not doubt that at some point we will see twelve...perhaps this year.

And 001A is coming along nicely. The latest pic is showing the flight deck really coming along, with that sponson in place and with the Ski-Jump looking like it may soon be lifted onto the bow.

I still doubt that there will be an 001A launch this year. They have a lot of work going on internally below the flight deck, and those holes in the flight deck are indicative of this.

They have the Ski-Jump to lift, and then the entire island to life and integrate.

Even once that is done structurally, there is just a ton of internal wiring, control, and space work that has to be accomplished before they will launch.

But that is fine...they are making very good progress.
