Not steam, very probably EML. Go to google earth, see 305902N 1212022E. What is it, what could it be? Measure it. Keep an eye on it, might be the answer to what you want to know.

We do not know if it is even happening.

We know the Chinese have been working on catapults...but these rumors about a system actually being live tested have been ongoing for years.

This is another one. it is This is simply a single line, unsourced, undocumented post on a "news" page of a forum...not a news article from any credible source.

Let's not use SD to spread undocumented, unsourced, rumors.

it's not rumor, it's widely reported in Chinese news.

Ma Weimin, the leading scientist who is in charge of the EM program, was asked by journalists about China's catapult system during the NPC meeting, Ma's reply was: the technology is ready, it's up to the navy to make the final decision.

I doubt its emals. Emals would require a lot of power that could only be provided by an iep system. Plus emals is a very immature technology, even by US standards.

If a senior Chinese official involved in the project says it is ready, I will take his word for it.

the decision for the PLA navy to make is: go steam, or go emals, it's not imminent, the first carrier China is going to build will not install catapult.

Ma is a professor, he is also a senior PLA officer with a rank of rear admiral.

Could you provide a link to where he says this to journalists?

The catapult itself may be ready. The systems around it...who can say. That said, IEPS isn't the only way to supply that power.

I searched the Chinese media, there're lots reports about it, but they all trace to a report by a hongkong newspaper "hongkong commercial daily" HKMD, I don't know how reliable it is.
