When they refitted the Liaoning they may not have extended the width or length of the hangar deck. But they seem to have raise the ceiling of the hangar deck compared to the Admiral Kuznetsov. There is still space between the folded wing of the J-15 and the ceiling of the hangar deck on the Liaoning. While on the Admiral Kuznetsov the folded wings of the SU-33 are practically hitting the ceiling.

Rearranging entire decks seems unrealistic, and it's more likely the Varyag had taller hangers after Soviet aircrew complained about lack of headroom. On the other hand, the Chinese started with an empty hull, so anything could have happened.

What you say is possible that the Varyag has gotten a taller hangar deck then the Admiral Kuznetsov. The Admiral Kuznetsov was laid down before the SU-33 was designed. The Varyag was laid down after the SU-33 was designed so they have to take into account the new big fighter.

I do not think the ceiling height was changed during this refit...but I could be wrong.

The differences in height may be purely a matter a perspective based on the angle of the view.

But the Kuznetsov clearly operates SU-33s, and they fit. The Liaoning clearly operates J-15s. If the PLAN needed additional height, I expect they took care of that during the initial build.

But that is purely my opinion.

If you ask me I think it's optical illusion. The PLAN may have rerouted some duct work, pipes, eletrical maybe even move a beam or two etc but I think the actual hanger dimensions themselves for the most part is still original to the Varyag.

If you raise the height of the hanger it means you are raising the heingt of the flight deck which runs the length of the entire ship! By just raising it even an inch nevermind a few feet you are basically changing the entire dynamics of the ship's structure and I just don't believe that happened in the refurbishment.

Of course this is just my humble opinion.

It could be just an optical illusion. But i think the most likely scenario is that they rerouted the piping and wiring in the hangar deck to make more head room. If the Varyag did get a taller hangar deck then it wouldn't have happened during the refit but was part of the redesign from the first Admiral Kuznetsov class carrier to the second.

No way that can be true. Flight deck is strength deck -- no way you can move that without affecting the integrity of the hull, not to mention screwing around armor quality deck steel that has to withstand the force of landing (difficult to cut and VERY difficult to weld). It's far easier to lower the floor of the hanger deck if they want to do it -- but even that is extremely hard to do without damaging the hull structure/integrity.

I didn't mean raising the ceiling by moving the deck plate. I meant that they rerouted piping and wiring to create more head space. I should have been more precise in my initial post. But perhabs as others have said it could be just an optical illusion.

Below the flightdeck is normaly the gallerydeck and than the hangar deck. You can remove part of the gallerydeck (it is hanging from the flightdeck) without weakening the overall strength. May be, for bigger aircraft like AWACS?

But I think, it is an optical illusion.

At gallerydeck-level you find the landing gear engines and catapult strokes. And the ready rooms for the flying personal for example. If I remember correct, the state rooms of captain and admiral are located at the nimitz-class-gallerydecks.
