This is normal in case anyone was wondering. Non-skid does wear out.

Can You tell us in what turnus it is being replaced on US carriers ??? (so was this a regular replacement or is it a hint of that something went wrong ?)

I did a search on Google for "anti skid coating carrier". One of the result "Navy Mantech" (?) talk about this subject. Sorry don't have the time to read it all >_<. Article titled "[PDF] Non-Skid Coatings" on the Google search result.

It indicated that around 80% of a Nimitz carrier coating are replaced after each deployment... Can someone confirm or otherwise?

If that is true, how does the other carrier operating navies cope with such issue?

How did that happen on the Liaoning in such a short period of time? It's not like she launched and recovered lots of aircrafts.

Perhaps the coating the PLAN currently using was found not to satisfaction? Remember, the Liaoning's main purpose is research and development. Tested it, found that not working as well as expected, use something else?

Well, we do not know exactly how many she has launched or recovered.

The original anti-skid surface was placed on the deck quite some time before she ever launched. So they amount of time it has been on deck has been a LOT longer than the time since her initial air ops.

Those surfaces are impacted by numerous things over and above the landings and takeoffs. Long exposure to heat, sunlight, weather, etc. also take their toll.

Up until 2012, the average life expectancy of US aircraft carrier non-skid coatings was 18 months...and that covers the amphibs and other vessels as well.

A new coating, supposedly with longer life was developed then. I do not know how long it is actually lasting, but I would not be surprised if the goals of the program were directed at doubling that.

Also, here's a neat video showing how the non-skid surface is removed. They use a specific hear generator and then scrape it off:

Yes.

The anti-skid surface is not something they need the dry dock for. That is occurring as she sits there next to the pier.

At the very least, while in the dry dock, they gave her a good scrubbing and cleaning to remove any inconsistencies from her hull, and then repainted her I am sure. That can all make a big difference in her efficiency while cruising. They may have had other structural, or machinery issues to address as well. We just do not know.

But periodic maintenance like this is not unusual.

Not so much that but time plays a significant factor as well.. no different than say your deck on your house.. it needs to be stained every few years regardless of traffic. I don't remember when they put the coating on Liaoning (2 yrs maybe) but it seems about right for a new coat.

Who knows...PLAN may have also decided to just redo the entire deck even if it's in relatively good shape because the next phase if going to be aviation focus for the next 12-18 months.. might as well give her a new coat now since she is in dock anyway.
