"you don't need a good NVG for just walking"
I'm not sure if you know exactly how dark it gets at night if there are no light sources around you (up to and including the moon). That being said, walking under NVG is a skill that takes some time to develop.

Their setup looks... heavier than it needs to be, honestly.
As one who once had to do night time guard duty at airbase, I've experienced everything from full moon lit to "can't see sh*t" kind of dark. So yes I feel ya on that one.

And in terms of "heavy", you should've seen what they got just 10 years back, their setup today is so much closer to what's the Western bloc is fielding today. Not to mention that PNVG, today China already produce equivalent setup and available for export. It takes time to induct anything into the PLA, unless there's a war going on.

Hah hah, hell yeah brother. Walking through temperate rainforest with heavy deadfall, an extra 100lbs of gear and no moon makes moving forward... challenging, lol.

Yeah, it's better than what it might have been, but I feel like they still haven't embraced the idea that ounces equal pounds and pounds equal pain.

Still, their gear is definitely competing well with last gen American tech (have you seen the US's new NVG systems? Damn man, I could die of envy, lol).

actually, having done plenty of night patrols through woods with crap NVG, and even more of those with no NVG, i know exactly what i need. if someone tells me he cant walk at night without good nvg, i am going to question that person's fieldcraft.

I'd say walking with crap NVG's are more of a hinderance than a bonus, lol. Good NVG's can absolutely assist in night moves over and above just good fieldcraft.

This is actually my first time seeing the PLA using this weapon. I was for a while wondering when they will start using it. Is this going to fully replace the CS/LR 4 or is this completely separate?
As far as I know , QBU-202 is chambered in 8.6mm , so it is a add ability , not a replacement.
Seems like with the return of 7.62mm, PLA is rethinking what abilities an infantry company should have , my guess would be QBU-191 will be a squad asset, CS/LR 4 will be a platoon asset , and the QBU-202 a company asset .

Underslung grenade launcher + optic

I believe the gun with the grenade launcher is the rifle version, not the carbine one. I know that pics of the rifle version with the grenade launcher are pretty common, but not the carbine one.

Also, RIP that soldier's day. Carrying a rifle with an optic and a grenade launcher AND rockets in Xinjiang is just going to suck.
